I'm not necessarily opposed to flipping that switch, just pointing out there is more to consider. Yes, it can be flipped back, if you have the necessary admin powers. Might there be a circumstance in which somebody might need to contact him when no admin is available?

Ummm... There is a report button for PM's as well, so that..... oh wait, never mind.

Sure, but I have no particular reason to know whether it's valid. I'm also not sure that the information is available to non admin staff. Maybe @tafkats can comment on that.

    I can't see email addresses.

At any rate, the only people who would have a critical NEED to contact the account would be admins. If the function is being abused, it should be taken away. The odds of a situation arising where (a) it's critical to the board that someone be able to PM the NotDayton dual immediately, and (b) that person is not an admin, AND (c) no admin is available ... seem vanishingly small.

When Skrain Dukat started posting porn all over the board, THAT had to wait for a person with the appropriate powers to deal with it. What could make the need to send a PM to NotDayton more time-sensitive than that?

As I've already indicated, I'm inclined to agree. I am just trying to thoroughly vet this, as I have no interest in taking an action that will bring yet another round of complaints to the Helpdesk. We've already got this thread, I'm not interested in a thread complaining that we are taking away messages, so it needs to be air tight. Yours and @Captain X's input have been very helpful.

So you can take away @Dayton3's report post functions, but taking away the PM powers of a dual whose sole purpose is to troll the very same person is perfectly okay and can be abused to now end?

    Unreal.

Yes, and then said he didn't want another rule. So the excuse is already inbuilt for the NotDayton account to carry on harassing Dayton.

What is what you want to avoid? The truth?

And please, have the respect to say it to me directly instead of treating me like a non-entity. I have been a member of this board for 12 years and would appreciate some recognition of that loyalty. Otherwise I am happy to leave.

Okay, Chup, I'll be direct. We don't want more bullshit from you. Got it? You complain about everything, when just about everybody else gets it. I respond to Tafkats and Captain X because they provide useful and meaningful input. You could do that, but you choose to follow a different path. We aren't obligated to run this place according to your perceived sense of injustice.

So in other words, you are using bullshit to get me to shut me up?

If that were the issue you, or any of the others, could've just sent a PM and spoken to me about your concerns like adults. Fake, bullshit rules is what drives people away. I am tired of your fucking arrogance and superiority. If I were owner, should I find a bullshit way to shut you up? Shut others up? Never. I provide useful input as much as the others, it's just not the input you want because it doesn't paint you in a good light. This why I question shitty rules designed to entrap people that you don't like.

There is no fairness in any of this. It's picking targets you don't like and going after them with trumped up nonsense. First Castle, then Dayton, now me.

I think I'm probably done here until there is a revised style of thinking.

He isn't the only one gul.

Tell me. IIRC El Chup has requested that the moderators provide the statistics or the information about the alleged "abuses of the Report Post" function and explain why the uses of Report Post have been considered an "abuse".

gul....if the change in rules by the moderators is such a great idea, then why not produce the information El Chup has requested and explain your reasoning? Surely if your evidence and reasoning is sound all of us will surround the moderators and sing spirituals to show you our support.........

There are no statistics. I think Gul has made it perfectly clear that this is nothing but weak nonsense constructed to undermine posters that annoy them (and it seems even if the reason for said annoyance are legitimate it doesn't matter if you "complain too much"). This unbalanced, inverse favoritism is exactly the bullshit that caused people to leave Trekbbs and come here in the first place. They have become the very thing they sought to escape.

I still don't understand TWO big things:

    1) Why are the moderators wanting to make changes when the board has been running fine anyway?

    2) What is it the moderators hope to achieve? Who do they want to leave? How do they envision the board looking afterwards?

Well, I think I'll be gone after tonight and will likely stay away until this policy is rethought or certain individuals are gone. They say I complain too much, but they don't seem to grasp that every day I go to work I fight when I see bullshit or injustice. I contest bullshit when I see it, and I don't care who the players are. If you were making the rule up and Gul was on the receiving end, my fight would be exactly the same. That's what petty grudge holders don't get.

You know, Dayton. The thing is, as you quite rightly point out, if they were just transparent then chances are half of the "complaints" would be resolved a damn sight quicker and people would at least feel as if they were being treated with respect, even if they still disagreed.

Then we get more of the above!

And around complaint # 23, somebody says, "fuck it, we need to tell people to knock this shit off and make sure they understand there will be consequences if they don't."

Interlude: helpdesk thread in which Chup and Dayton complain vociferously, almost like they know they are the problem.

Well maybe that's your problem. This isn't your workplace, this is a place for free form discussion. We don't have legalistic rules and precedent and such. You could enjoy the place for what it is, or you can harass and harangue the ownership because reasons. That's less fun. That's not what this place is supposed to be.

So you are alleging that I used the Report Post function if what? 15 times in a year? That is barely once a month.

And whether the report is rejected or not should not be an indicator of whether the report is legitimate or not.

I isn't a free form discussion when the moderator make up rules they

    1) Refuse to clearly define
    2) Based on data they refuse to reveal.

So what you're saying is that this place is supposed to operate with members being on unequal footing. That's exactly why people left Trekbbs. You're just too stubborn to acknowledge that it's what is really going on here. Just because this isn't my office, it does mean that the place shouldn't operate with fairness. Is the gul who complained so much about perceived unfairness under previous owners, now advancing the "we'll run it how we choose and fuck off if you don't like it" line? Oh, how you've changed. You just can't see it can you?

Dayton, it's a made up list. I don't report nearly as many posts as that list implies.

Gul says "I know I'm the problem". No. I stick by my principles. I'm not trolling, I'm standing up against unfairness.

It's not a made up list. While the system doesn't keep a permanent log, it does keep a temporary report rejection list. That is how I keep track.

Rubbish. Dayton and I have submitted exactly the same amount of reports, and one after the other like that? I know for a fact that's utter bullshit. It's clearly a fake list. I haven't reported more than about 3 posts a month, if that.....what's more you can't even tell me what the abuses were.

It varies. Unresolved reports are held on longer than resolved, which are dumped as soon as the report system refreshes. Rejected reports are kept longer, about a month. Those are the ones I mark down because those are the ones that are rejected due to not meeting the requirements for reportable action. In other words, if you report someone for calling you a jerk, but they did it in the Red Room, that report is rejected, as it isn't against the rules to call someone a jerk in the Red Room.
