Posters have been chased away for having incorrect thoughts about how toilet paper goes on the roll? Who?

Wait, does that mean I can be a conservative as soon as we have found a medical solution to abortion? I have a bunch of colleagues who will be shocked to hear that.

It's his way of saying "posting swastikas and threatening to lynch black posters". Think about that for a minute.

I mean, he could probably make a nice white hood out of toilet paper. As long as he unrolls it the correct way.

I consider this conservative thinking. Taking what works and looking at the cost versus benefits of things like Universal Health Care and even a Universal Basic Income doesn't seem radical, or even liberal to me. One of the (many) problems we have with the present setup is that we have no infrastructure to build on. The Scandanavian model allows governments to strengthen programs that already exist and are already mitigating the most serious problems. Here we just end up throwing money at problems increasing the possibility of aid going into the pockets of mega corporations instead of into the hands of small business operators. We may have some disagreements on the best way to achieve that, but if we agree on where we're trying to go, we'll get there. Another problem is that stuff you and I see as problems aren't even recognized as such by the kleptocrats who have co-opted the "conservative" label.

Oddly enough, with a few tweaks, I'm actually fairly close to the Republican Platform that George W. Bush ran on in 2000. Before 9/11, Bush was the face of "compassionate conservatism." It's just that in the intervening period, the GOP has lost its bloody mind.

GWB is a sad case. Somehow he let himself get hornswoggled into letting Cheney and company pull his strings and 9/11 showed him to be completely out of his depth. One is clearly his fault, the other is a much murkier matter. I've always been willing to give him credit for trying to mitigate the illegal aliens problem. He cared and he tried, but got no help from his own party and he didn't have enough juice to effectively work across the aisle with Democrats. I keep thinking back to a video clip I saw of him during a debate during the Texas governor's race. He was engaged, well prepared and confident. (Whether I would have liked or agreed with what he was saying is irrelevant). I've always considered his post 9/11 speech to Congress as his best moment. He gave a good speech that clearly spelled out who attacked us and what we needed to do to counter the threat. Sadly, it didn't last. By the time he decided to push Cheney aside and become the real President, it was too late.

Then there was the side of him that reveled in state executions, and he even mocked a woman who got fried begging for her life going "please don't kill me!!", in an imitation of her voice.

Better than Trump, but still not a great guy.

Is it sad that I'd take Bush II over what we have now any day of the week? I never thought that would be possible.

I'd take eight more years of anyone from Ford to Obama over what we have now. His time has come again. It's time to prop Reagan's casket up behind the Resolute Desk. :bergman:
