Brie Larson was underwhelming, but the film had enough going for it otherwise, especially Sam Jackson. The 90s references were enjoyable.

    I'm gonna up-vote the 6.5/10 conclusion.

So I haven't seen it yet but found out
Kevin Fiege gave reasons for this, but they basically boil down to "because we wanted to." Now I'm not gonna bitch too much, as the movies have made HUGE changes to various and sundry characters from the comics version. But come on . . . this is a major, major change for no real reason. :sigh:

When you watch the movie, you'll see there is actually a very good reason. And since Mar-Vell is almost certainly a title rather than a name, it doesn't even preclude us from meeting him yet (death and time notwithstanding, because comics).

In the grand scheme of things, it's really not much of a change, since...

I'd just like to say, Henry Cavill as Superman is ridiculously over-powered.
    And he should smile more.
    Stuck up little bitch.
Who does he think he is?
And who does DC think they are inventing him out of thin air to upstage Batman?
    Assholes.

Yeah, but Superman has a specific weakness that can be exploited. Does Captain Marvel? (Other than mediocre acting?)

Well, assuming she's the same as the original comics Mar-Vell, cancer.

Yeah, the same thing that can kill most other fuckers.

Just saw it. I liked it. Don't think Brie Larson did that bad a job. Seems to me that she played the person she was supposed to play.

Nothing that I saw in the film gives even the slightest hint of this. How do you deduce this?

    Mar-Vell is not a title. It's a persons name.

From wiki: "After the Kree's first encounter with humans,[14] Captain Mar-Vell is sent to spy on Earth and decide if it is a threat to the Kree empire.[5] He adopts the identity of a recently deceased scientist named Walter Lawson, but occasionally dons his Kree military uniform to protect the people he's observing. The first time he does this, people hear him incorrectly pronounce his name as "Captain Marvel". His job is made difficult by his jealous commanding officer, Colonel Yon-Rogg, his growing affection for humanity, and his fake identity's criminal past.[15]"

As for making the character a woman..... I don't care. People put too much emphasis on the gender of lesser characters. Mar-Vell came out in the sixties. It's not a big deal the gender was changed.

She says to Fury: "It's two words."And it's clear that she has another name for the Mar-vell in her own past. But more importantly, in the comics Mar-vell has several instances in which he says that that mantel will pass on to someone else. That makes sense with 'Batman', but not with 'Bruce Wayne'.

    Yes. Two words.

    Mar

    Vell

Don't get hung up on the dash. Mar-vell has a son called Genis-Vell and a daughter called Phyla-Vell.

And in the comics the mantel he's talking about is not his name Mar-Vell but what he has become to humanity which is Captain Marvel.

    Yes...

Right. "Marvel" passes on. Not "Mar-Vell".

I can only speak to the comics, but "Mar-Vell" was his name, not his title. Like Yon-Rogg, Ronan, Una . . .

I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would.

I thought all of the actors did a good job with their roles although Jude Law was underwhelming. The scenes with him and Bree Larson didn’t feel quite right. On the other hand the scenes with Sam Jackson were great. Great to finally see him be one of the main characters and have a story arc.

I liked all the MCU connections and comic book Easter Eggs and the Stan Lee cameo was fun and very meta.

A few more lines of dialogue to explain things better would have helped, though I could probably fill in the gaps. Like how did Nick Fury track Danvers to the bar? Why or how did Goose end up on Earth? What brought Lawson/Mar-Vell to Earth? How did the Skrull refugees end up on her ship? Why didn’t Fury call Danvers when Loki invaded Earth? How did Korath escape the ship and end up with Ronan?

But overall I liked the movie a whole lot and will watch it again and maybe things will make more sense the second time. I’d put it at average for an MCU film... although I enjoyed pretty much every film in the series so far to some extent so that isn’t saying much.

Better than Iron Man 3, Dark World, Incredible Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp... about on the level of first Ant-Man, Black Panther and First Avenger.

Not as good as Wonder Woman overall. Gal Gadot was more likeable and relatable in her role...Wonder Woman was tough and determined but also a flawed character who made mistakes.

Bree Larson was a little stiff but I guess that kind of worked with her role as an amnesiac who was trained to suppress her emotions and focus on being a soldier. Nice to see the other side come out, especially when she was interacting with Fury and the Rambeau family.

Kind of interesting to note... there wasn’t even a hint of romance in this movie. I think this might be a first for the MCU solo films. Cap, Stark, Banner, Thor, Peter Quill, Scott Lang, Strange, Spidey, and T’Challa all had some sort of love interest at some point. Not saying it’s good or bad... just an observation.

    1. She said the pager had a range of a couple galaxies, maybe she was 5 galaxies away.
    2. She may have been busy fighting something as big or bigger on another planet.
    3. Maybe Fury thought the Avengers could handle it.

Yeah. That's a hole in the movie about the bar scene. It makes no sense he was able to get to that particular bar

Goose? Probably came with Mar-Vell. Though where the hell was it hiding for six years in that base?

Skrulls? Given what Mar-Vell was doing she probably rescued them or gave them safe-harbor.

In fact now that I think about it since the Skrulls seemed to have targeted Danvers at the beginning of the movie maybe that was because Mar-Vell told them to go get her and bring her back. That conflicts however with the interrogation scene.

Fury didn't call because he thought the Avengers had it. And really they were doing a pretty good job at it. The nuke almost wrecked things but they handled that too.

Korath? Open question. Probably barely got out in time. We do see that he looks different in Guardians of The Galaxy. He has some computer equipment in his head. Maybe he was rescued and fixed. I would point out that in GOTG when Ronan is telling Thanos to fuck off that Korath tells Ronan that Thanos is the most powerful being in the universe. Maybe Thanos is involved in upgrading Ronan and Korath after Captain Marvel.
