Most cover songs can be... interesting. But rarely do they exceed the original version.

For me, hands down, Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt" is one of those rare covers that not only exceeds the original but leaves it completely in the dirt (pardon the pun). It is impossible for me to hear Trent Reznor's version now.

What other cover songs do you think are better than the original?

In 1966, the Andrew Oldham Orchestra did a cover of the Rolling Stone's 1965 song "The Last Time". In 1997, The Verve sampled the Andrew Oldham cover with their smash hit, "Bittersweet Symphony". Each version has its own charm and, weirdly, in my opinion gets better than the previous version.

I think there's something called "the official cover thread" but this is slightly different, in that I'm looking for covers that are better than the originals.

Pretty much everyone that covers Bob Dylan does a better version. Hendrix nailed All Along the Watchtower though.

Great video. Is it from something or is it original to the band?

    This one is great:

But then again, any cover of "Mad World" is going to be better than the awful Tears for Fears original, IMO.

okay, last one I swear! But it's better than the original because......it's a mariachi version! How does this not kick ass?

Baby I Love Your Way, let's call it a tie

Does Offspring's "Get a job" count as a cover of the Beatles' "Obladi, oblada"?

never knew this was a cover of The Sonics version - but I like this one better!
Not to nitpick but I could swear this sounds slowed down just a bit (maybe five percent) from the copy I have on my thumb drive but it could be my imagination.

let me help you out with this one @TheLonelySquire

The original was done by Bruce Springstein. Manfred Mann and ELO did the proper version of the song.
