The way they did this is absolutely fascinating.

Yes, it's fascinating. It does still have some faults -- you can see the repetition of a certain enhancement pattern in the comet's tail when the camera follows it directly from behind -- but as with the artificial faces we've seen jump from "Rogue One" to "Captain Marvel", that will be temporary. Perhaps Mitchell was right after all, just twenty years early.

Twenty years for the home hobbyist, perhaps, but probably not even that long. In reading the guy's blog post about it, the hardware requirements for the software that he used aren't terribly demanding. From the looks of it, all I would need to do with my rig (that's nearly 4 years old now) is to slap in a better video card and I'd be able to run the stuff. IIRC, my total build cost for the machine was around $1K. Big budget movies have their effects done on machines that cost $13K or so, and they can do things that can mop the floor with the machines that did The Phantom Menace, as can the average PC you buy today. The quality jump from Rogue One to Captain Marvel took only 3 years, in another 3 years, you'll probably be able to buy a home PC for a couple of grand that can match the performance of the machines that did the work in Rogue One.

The real question is: What's going to happen in a few years, when it becomes possible for the home hobbyist to whip out better resolution versions of things like DS9 than the studios are willing to offer? Convenience might trump fidelity, but when you've got a 4 or 8K TV and the only legal version of your favorite show is a crappy SD copy, that BitTorrent of someone's upconverted version is going to be awfully tempting.

Impressive, but would like to see some brief use of this on live action clips from the show.

The image is definitely cleaner and crisper, but in my opinion only marginally so. The problem is the source material.

    Still, pretty neat stuff.

It’s hard to tell the difference. I doubt the fx shots will hold up under that process.

This is very interesting. Kind of like using an Instagram filter to increase sharpness, detail, etc, but exponentially more adavanced.

It'd be nice if they'd do this for the streaming services. The upgraded TNG looks damn good on Netflix.

Good, but not great. Still, I’d love to see an updated DS9.

This technology has been in use for a few months by game modders creating higher resolution textures for older games. It's interesting to see it applied to a TV show.

These systems have to be trained by comparing datasets of low resolution and high resolution versions of the same images. Trek presents an intriguing and unique opportunity in that regard as all of TNG is available in both the original broadcast quality and the HD remaster. I wonder how good the model could get using the TNG remaster as input data.

This is about a year old, all CGI, and is in UHD (which depending upon who you ask, is or is not different than 4K).

I saw a peek of a screener stream of the documentary that’s not out yet. All the clips were converted to HD. Not sure how many minutes.
