I agree with you. Any job that entails toting a weapon - especially with a likelihood of using it - should weed out employees who demonstrate an inability to handle weapons. It shouldn't take a felony to initiate this action either.

So on the subject of police reforms IMHO there are many ways to skin a cat. But the first step should be (no matter how difficult it can be and apparently it is very difficult) HIRE BETTER COPS/FIRE & FLAG INCOMPETENT COPS. All the training & procedural changes mean nothing if your employees don't give you anything to work with. It's like paining a torn canvas.

I accept there are times when deadly force needs to be used to neutralize a threat. I just think that police too often unnecessarily create a situation in which deadly force is the only available option.

The story is two years old, BTW.
In the late 80s/early 90s a study in Chicago, IIRC, showed that trees in low-income housing neighborhoods also decreased crime.

Trees? This is 2021 last time I checked. Trees are a racist symbol of white supremacy because trees can be used to lynch blacks. I expect them to be torched this summer as soon as riot season kicks into high gear.

Thanks for sharing. It was a well-written and interesting article even if it was pretty long.

Here's a summary: A relatively new officer in a small West Virginia town is the first to respond to a man with a gun call. Stephen Mader learns that the man is apparently suicidal and is saying to shoot him. (No cops knew at the time that the man had taken the clip out of the gun, even though the ex had told the dispatcher that). He tried talking the man, R.J. Williams, down, even while Mader had his gun out. Two backup officers arrive and within seconds, one of them fires four shots, killing Williams. Mader gets fired shortly after for cowardice, having never been interviewed beyond giving his original statement or given a chance to defend his decision not to fire (because he didn't see the man as a threat initially, although he has never criticized the shooting officer for shooting when he did). The authorities deemed the shooting justified and the family (it sounds like) did not make any/much headway in suing the town. The fired officer sued for wrongful termination and won a $175,000 settlement. He is now a MP with the National Guard.

There's a lot to unpack there, from suicide by cop being an actual phenomenon, to the mistreatment of Williams' family and Mader, to what might be a better system.

Under our legal system, we're supposed to judge things from the perspective of what the officers knew at the time and not with the benefit of hindsight. And this is one where IMO those judgment might vary greatly. Knowing for sure that Williams was not an actual threat makes shooting him wrong in the big picture moral sense IMO. But the officers did not know that and it's therefore legally justifiable to shoot someone who is apparently armed with a gun that he was pointing at police officers.

In a perfect world, Williams would have been receiving counseling over the breakup well in advance of the call, and mental-health professionals would respond to such calls. But is that realistic that a small West Virginian town, or even a big city, would have mental health professionals on call 24-7 to dispatch to scenes? Or that they would have better outcomes than the cops if they did?

another factor Raoul - would an unarmed mental health counselor respond to a call about an armed suicidal man? :chris: Or do you mean mental health experts should have intervened during a prior call when he may not have been armed? In a perfect world a cop would be teamed up with a mental health professional, and throw in a paramedic with an ambulance just to cover all the bases. Suicidal folks are always a touch-and-go situation. An army bud of mine (RIP from a suicide several years ago) :( had his suicidal brother killed by cops back in the late 80's and he hated cops after that because of it. Side note weird how suicide runs in families sometimes.
