    NO SHIT SHERLOCK! :chris: My point was about the only time we see roman numerals is when they are used to number superbowls (I guess it makes the game more epic or historic or whatever) but nobody even questions that or realizes that the other 99.999 percent of the time we use regular old fashioned universally accepted arabic numbers.

    Fuck those ignorant pricks who think we shouldn't use arabic numbers. Just for spite the US should switch from a base 10 to a base 17 math system just to give them something to cry about! :weep:

    You have no idea how many times someone has asked me to engrave something with "II-0-I-IX" as the year. :facepalm:

    I gently try to explain why they're wrong. Most take the correction and let me do what I need to do. But, I had one woman refuse to hear any different. It was her money, so whatever. I engraved it perfectly and she loved it. :marathon:

    My wife got me into crossword puzzles, and we do one together every night. It seems to be popular in crosswords to present math problems in Roman numerals. Oy vey, that makes your brain twist a little.

    This is a typical gotcha type question that tries to make Americans look stupid by deliberately using the technical or historic name for very common every day things. Just like FoxNews interviewer Jesse Waters used to like asking people in on the street interviews if they favored banning "dihydrogen monoxide" (water).

    Arabic Numerals is the common, every day name for the numbering system we use. I remember learning that in grade school. There's no excuse for more than half the people in the country not knowing that.

    exactly! It's not a "gotcha" question or a niche subject - I honestly thought everyone knew that 1,2,3 etc. are arabic numerals and XVI etc. are roman numerals.

    spot no offense but sometimes you come off as "too smart for your own good". Base 10 might have originated from counting on our fingers, but the base 10 system with a lot of numbers ending in 0 makes basic math a whole lot faster when doing it in your head, or rounding off or whatever. Granted my mind is not wired for math and I'm terrible at it, thus I'll take the path of least resistance

    It doesn't matter if you do your math in base 10, 5, 12, or 13- it all just depends on what you are originally taught. The most important concept is that of 'zero', which, when you stick on the end of a number, increases its 'place' value. If you count by 12's with 'zero' you can count and multiply by 12's as easily as we do by 10's.

    They covered this in multiplication rock when we were kids.

    What you're seeing is people reacting to the word Arabic.

    They either don't know or don't remember that we use the Arabic Numeral system.

    When people think Arabic they are probably thinking of something similar to this:

    I'm permanently scarred by having to do a company datasheet translated to Arabic. Not because it was Arabic in particular, but by trying to get Adobe InDesign to accept right-to-left text cut-and-pasted from MSWord, and having no clue whether I did it right until someone at corporate HQ could get it proof-read by someone who could read it. And there was a data table included that nearly caused my brain to explode.

    Apparently you were expecting too much of people. It's one of your sweeter qualities.

    No offence taken, you're probably right.

    I make no claim though to be anything other more than competent where it comes to maths, but from what I understand though the duodecimal system does work the same way, with multiples of what we call "twelve" ending in zero, with twelve itself being written "10" in that notation.

    I imagine @Paladin might be better informed here.

    It would just be different ones, and the ones that would make more sense! Divisible by 2! By 3! By 4! Near-perfectly counting the hours in the day, as well as the night! Numbering the months in a year without repetition! Cognitive bliss for all!

    0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, 10, 11,...
    Duodecimal 3B = 47 (3 * 12^1 + B * 12^0)

    Hexadecimal (used extensively in computer science and electronics) is similar...
    0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10, 11,...
    Hex 2A = 42 (2 * 16^1 + A * 16^0)
