George W. Bush 'appreciated' Ellen DeGeneres going to bat for friendship after backlash

"DeGeneres continued: "When I say 'be kind to one another,' I don’t mean only the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone. Doesn’t matter."

People really need to take this to heart and stop politicizing everything. He's been our of office for 11 years and they've been friends for awhile. Why shouldn't they enjoy a game together? Critics of that need to get a life.

Clever title aside, it's all well and good that the money she now has after nearly losing her career because of people like Bush can insulate her from the bigotry the rest of the Real World faces.

But even putting aside that...he's a war criminal and we're still living the effects of his decisions. We now have adults born after Sept 11 and I'm a year or so, we'll have the first troops who did their entire career in war time conditions retiring from the armed forces. I'm not even giving him a "He's not Trump" pass because having respect for the office is the absolute bare minimum we should expect out of a leader.

I ain't mad, but after being all but unemployed and bannished from my career for coming out, I would have fuck all to do with anyone to the right of 2008 Barrack Obama if I were her.

    This.

Look, I love people on a very fundamental level. Every human being is deserving of basic rights such as food, shelter, medicine, autonomy of their person, and so on. Kindness is important, and we should share as much of it as we can, but kindness does not always mean being nice. Sometimes kindness means telling the truth no matter what the cost.

As a human being, George W. Bush seems like a funny, sweet guy. As a president, however, he oversaw the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, including thousands of soldiers, the destruction of villages and towns across Iraq, men who weren't convicted of any crimes, were tortured, some dying from that abuse, and all of it based on a lie.

Whether or not you believe he was a dupe and the real evil was pulling his strings or not does not change he still had a mind of his own and could have stopped it at any moment, but chose to push those policies through.

Then there's Katrina, and how George W. Bush dragged his feet on addressing the immediate and urgent needs of an entire city coming apart at the seams, with people dying every day that nothing was accomplished. Bush was on his ranch, and had been there for 27 days when the hurricane hit.

G.W. Bush also pushed for the marriage amendment, banning same sex marriage. That would be the marriage that Ellen has with Portia.

See, both she and George W. Bush share something in common: they have a shitload of money, and people who have a shitload of money tend to stick up for other people who have a shitload of money. Many of the people who came to Ellen's defense were wealthy celebrities, who don't ever have to worry about going without medicine, without having a lack of resources to address their needs. They're not marginalized, or at the fringes of society, they enjoy the full benefit of it and can generally ignore things that would get you or I in deep trouble.

What it comes down to is not a difference of opinion. George W. Bush had the power of the U.S. government in his hands, and he used it to make people's lives miserable. He can stay on his ranch and paint, that's fine, but I will not accept that he's just this sweet, affable grandpa who wouldn't harm anyone. He did harm people. His actions directly harmed people. He is an actual war criminal in parts of the world because of those actions. Time has softened his image, and that's because Trump is such a clusterfuck that it makes anyone look good by comparison, but don't let rose colored glasses give you warm fuzzies. Innocent men, women, and children died directly because of his policies, and before you think he's changed since then, in 2018 he pushed for the approval of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court.

    Have a cough drop.

Speaking of the marriage, it's worth pointing out that she and Portia got hitched well ahead of the Prop 8 fiasco, when CA were issuing marriage licenses to gays (hense, Prop 8). I remember this because she was very adament about others having the same right to marry after this law went into effect.

If the consistent rumors about her cheating are true, it doesn't seem like her vows mean all that much, however. :|

I'm a child who can do basic math. Obama was elected in 2008 - he has a mind of his own, he could have pulled the plug on the sandbox immediately so why didn't he?

I have serious problems with Obama, one of the biggest being his expansion of the intelligence community and its erosion of privacy, his use of drones, and the same hawkishness that has led U.S. policy for decades. He also continued to allow the use of torture. Obama is another very wealthy man who can enjoy being insulated from the worst effects the poor experience every day.

So if you thought that whataboutism was going to be a gotcha, you were mistaken.

Is anybody giving the Obama's crap for their cozy relationship with W? The way I remember it, everybody thought the interaction between Michelle and George at McCain's funeral was adorable .

As far as I'm aware, the Obamas and Bushes aren't chatting it up like teenage girls and only interact at major events that bring them together. Plus, there two of four remaining people in the world who have lived the experiences they have and understand the struggles of such a job, so some leeway is to be expected.

Like I said, it's baffling more than anything with Ellen, given her history, is all.

Good of you to not quote the relevant parts.

Bush and Obama bonded after getting seated next to each other at endless events where they were obligated to be polite to each other. Additionally, they both support similar charitable causes. That friendship at least makes sense.

Well, you have to know Bush is a scumbag when he seems to be the only person who could tarnish Ellen's reputation.

At any rate, Ellen is pretty anti-conflict and overwhelmingly tries to get along with everyone. Do we know anyone else like that? This is the problem with all of that, especially when you end up giving some credit to people who shit on others like the Bush family.

There is a reality that many of us could have a pleasant moment at a baseball game with people we hate. For the people who look up to ellen as a person who has made giant progress in getting people to rethink their ideas about gays because of her personality and entertaining humor this was going to be a betrayal.

Ellen is not a fighter like that. She is not going to put her neck on the line for people now that she has hers. She is not even going to ask tough questions on her shows to prejudiced people. She is hired to be liked by everyone and that is who she is. If you were waiting around for Ellen to lead you to equal rights and fight against people like Bush you were going to be waiting for a long time. That is not what the people who want to be everyone's friends do. Fighting like that makes enemies and conflict, and Ellen never really did any of that. It is why she got run over at her own show.

Ellen follows the kind of toothless niceness that I used to believe in when I was much younger. This idea that if you smile and be polite to everyone, you can overlook their differences. The problem with that mindset is that there are people who, no matter how nice you are, would rather see you dead. If you're a black man, all the smiles in the world won't stop David Duke from thinking of you as subhuman garbage who should be killed merely for existing. All of the soft speaking, the friendly overtures, they don't matter when you're not even considered human. Kindness is a two way street, and it requires active effort. It is also discerning, as while you can be kind to someone in the sense that all human beings share a commonality, there are times when kindness requires an act of refusal. You refuse to accept someone as they are if what they are is cruel towards others. You refuse to validate their opinions that black people, trans people, or gay people, are somehow worth less than straight, cisgender men.

You do not smile and shake hands with a man who tried to push the U.S. government into denying you the right to marry, or the right to get a job, because of your orientation. It's not kindness to nod your head and say you're friends. That's cruelty to the people under the thumb of the oppressor. Do not be kind to your oppressor.

I will give Bush some points for having a very diverse WH staff. He also did try to reign in the anti-muslim rhetoric after he unleashed the beast on their countries and used 9/11 to demonize the wrong muslims so we could destroy Iraq. Sorry, the man was a complete enemy to the GLBT community and civil unions were not the same as marriage under his open-mindedness. Civil unions were seperate but equal because straight people would have marriage. If everyone were to have civil unions as a government partnership then I would agree with you, but I remember history.
