Well this is kinda cool. Using an electrical field, a small prototype airplane flies with no moving parts. Interesting concept, lots of potential (so to speak).

Pretty cool. Step closer to anti-gravity paint.

hmmm........makes me ponder all those UFO reports about weird looking crafts not making any noise as they flew over! :calli:

I've heard rumors of aircraft with high voltage panels on their leading edges which help shape the airflow around them. But getting a little efficiency boost from electricity is a far cry from using it to fly.

So what happens if you're underneath it? Nothing, or do you get fried?

Nothing, I would think. But you wouldn't want to get in close proximity to the high voltage elements.

Not that there isn't still a long way to go for it but this could help with the fight against climate change, to which jet fuel is a major contributor.

Yes, there are a lot of things that can be made battery-powered, but jetliners aren't one of them. Yet.

We're a long way from airliners that run on anything but Jet-A. Electric motors simply don't have the smack to get a fully loaded Boeing into the air.

    Jet fuel: around 50 megajoules/kg.

    Lithium: less than 1 megajoule/kg.

    So, yeah, a looong way.

This is aerodynamic propulsion, not antigravity or whatever.

No, but for a small stealthy drone it's more than adequate.

Jet fuel is a major contributor? Thanks for mentioning that. From now on every motherfucker attending a "climate change" summit can choose from these modes of transportation to get there:

    1) shoe leather express
    2) bicycle
    3) pogo stick
    4) sailboat....rowboat....kayak....other form of non-motorized watercraft
    5) swim
    6) lawn chair tied to helium balloons

that way they are part of the solution, not the problem
