well you my friend are in for a whole world of fun, especially on Fridays after work. :bergman: BTW why do they need a shopping mall only a few miles from Manhattan? Last time I was there they had plenty of stores of every description. What am I missing here?

Nobody drives into Manhattan to shop. Nobody sane drives into Manhattan unless they have to. Never mind bumper-to-bumper traffic, there's nowhere to park except obscenely priced parking garages. Oh, and then there's sales tax. Usual the hegira is in the opposite direction to save on sales taxes, particularly on big-budget items.

DC's also insane, but have you ever driven in Manhattan?

I never said anything about driving into Manhattan. I said there are plenty of shopping opportunities there. I'd rather take a train/subway into Manhattan from NJ myself, then walk around or taxi if needed. But that's just me. Gridlock traffic and malls are pure torture to me.

I didn't drive the last time I was in DC - I took a train in from some town just south of DC where our motel was. I have driven near DC on I-95 and traffic was pretty bad, so I can imagine driving into the areas I visited - no thanks!

Again: sales tax. And how much of what are you buying and can you lug it home? I know people who'll spend hours and gas to drive from, say, Brooklyn, into Jersey to "beat the %$#@! sales tax." Not saying they're sane, but it's a tradition.

Also, RE: subways, especially this time of year: the trains may be air-conditioned, but the platforms aren't. They've been absorbing the heat from the surface level all summer. Temps up to 140 degrees have been measured at end-of-the-line stations where the trains idle with the doors closed and the a/c blasting inside the cars. Then there's standing on an unheated subway platform in the winter...

Thank the gods for online shopping...

I've driven in Seoul Korea a lot (I was stationed right there in the city in 1992 and again in 1994) and on occasion epic gridlock would jam you up for over an hour. Yep - no movement (maybe 100 yards or so) for over 60 lovely minutes. I think sedated turtles move faster than that. Factor in being in a thirty vehicle military convoy pulling trailers and you have yourself a party. :brood:

Yes I have and I've found free parking spaces. You have to walk a bit, but it's free.

Here I am - the circle on the left is work, the big circle on the right is the mall & sports arena. Driving distance is about 4 miles.
Happily, I go north up rt 21 to get home, so it shouldn't affect me. I'm outta there in 4 months anyway!

You retire in four months? You are dead to me! :brood: I have about five more years.
I tell myself I can do that standing on my head, but between corporate and shifty coworkers I'm at my wits end most of the time.

Right? NYC is just off the east end of the map there. Rt 3 goes to the Lincoln Tunnel. 17 starts there and goes north into NY state. 95 is the NJ Turnpike and goes all the way to the south of the state. 21 goers south to Newark. 3 west crosses the Garden State Parkway a few miles off the map which goes to shore points south, then 3 becomes rt 46 which leads to interstate 80 and the rest of the country!
