He got some gigs hosting military shows on the history channel for a while but not to many acting gigs after FMJ.

    Ah, shit.

I heard him in a voiceover for an ad today and thought he sounded strained/weak.

An indelible, forceful presence on the screen. He will be missed.

    ???

He has dozens of acting credits after FMJ. He hadn't had many prominent roles in recent years, however, and said he'd been essentially blacklisted because of negative comments he made about President Obama.

I always thought that he should have been Zim in Starship Troopers, if the movie had actually been based on the book and not Verhoeven's fantasies.

While Full Metal Jacket is legendary, I'll personally always remember him as the evangelical preacher in Fletch Lives. An overall weak sequel but a nonetheless great satire on the religious money making industry of middle America.

That insurance commercial (Geico I think), "Does a former drill instructor make a really bad therapist" is so funny that I'll remember it forever.

I saw Fletch Lives during its theatrical run, and, only years later watching it on home video did I realize that the preacher was Ermey. When I originally saw the movie in the theater, I didn't really "know" him.

thanks for bringing that up! He throws a tissue at the guy....classic! I bet when he was an actual Marine DI he was one scary, scary dude. :shep:Those Marine DI's do not play around. They pretty much have a blank check to abuse the ever loving shit out of recruits. Definitely Red Room material!

I just remembered - when I was in Korea for my first tour in 1992 this guy I
yes I know his bio. He was the real deal no doubt. He briefly ran a whorehouse in Thailand just after exiting the military but obviously he doesn't advertise it. Google it and you can get more.

He was also in "The Boys in Company C", which is a superior yet little-seen Vietnam pic that came out a few years before Platoon. Ermey played, what else, a Drill Sargent during the boot camp scenes, and he rocked!

I enjoyed him in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, he was able to play a different, somewhat comedic character in those.

You are correct! Except that the punishment for disobeying this rule is the death penalty. It's the ultimate catch-22 that's for sure.
