Does anyone watch this? It's got "mixed" reviews to say the least but I actually quite enjoy it, and it seems to be hitting its stride now in season two, mostly by going even more over-the-top than before. The guy playing Alfred is great, the Bruce/Selina interactions are really awesome/cute and the boy playing the Joker (or not!Joker depending on what you think) is quite fabulous.

I've made it through two episodes and figured I'd wait until more reviews were in. It was darker than I prefer (as in not much lighting budget or something).

If you're anal about canon I think you'll hate it. That said DC canon is so screwed up anyway that it's completely impossible to stay faithful to its many iterations; better to create something own that works within the context of the show. The first season had some definitive weak points (Barbara, for one...) but at its best times it was pretty great stufff.

I've been keeping up with it.

It's not amazing television but it hasn't lost me as a viewer yet either.

Easily the best live action interpretations of the Riddler and Penguin, so that is something. The girl playing Selina has some potential.

The show definitely reminds of Smallville at times.

I think Camren does a great Cat, yes. I also think David makes a passable young Bruce. He's very young, though. They were taking a gamble casting him, no way to know how he'll turn out when he grows up, but at least his rapport with Camren is very good.

I've been loving the show. Nice and dark, decent takes on most of the characters, and story lines that work.

Yeah, I think the critics are canon geeks who can't get past that to enjoy the show for what it is. I have a lot of fun watching the various oddballs who cross the screen each week, and Penguin consistently steals the show. I say that as somebody who has never much cared for any other Penguin portrayal, but they've nailed it this time.

I think it basically comes down to this: I'm enough of a Batman fan to enjoy the evolving back story; I'm not so much of a Batman fan to be bothered by any liberties they take. And I absolutely love the atmospherics, including the lack of a lighting budget.

Characters in the comics have had so many changes to their back story that there really is no true canon.

absolutely devastated and I will always see the rest of this series as less than it could have been to have wasted this magnificent portrayal. If there is any justice in the artistic universe, the day will come when Monaghan will play the actual Joker and be seen as the definitive version. It may be that in playing a "not Joker" he has still delivered the definitive performance.

Gotham Review #02 #03 “The Last Laugh”
    For @camrenbicondova et al…

So, the lovely miss Bicondova asked us what we tumblr people thought of tonight’s episode, and since it’s already quite clear I won’t get any sleep, I figured I might answer.

Please note that this is a super-spoilery review discussing not only the episode in full but also potential further ones so if you’re not into that, please bugger off ;-)

The plot of the episode is pretty straight-forward. Theo Galavan decides to set himself up as a hero, so he has his stooges - Barbara and Jerome - hijack a charity party, murder a couple of people and threaten Bruce’s life, after which he saves mister Wayne by killing Jerome and Barbara disappears. That’s basically it.

First of all I’d like to say I really like the tone of the show so far in the second season and I prefer it to the first. At some times, the first season threatened to go into villain-of-the-week territory a la Smallville. I feel the story here is more coherent and better for setting up the factions and players.

The tone has also changed in that it has gone into more over-the-top comic book territory, and it suits the show well. The violence is brutal and effective and I actually believe they’ve done a decent job at catching a whiff of the feel of Tim Burton’s adaptation. That’s a plus since in the directing category that was marvellous.

Now, there’s been a fair deal of outrage about the show killing off Jerome. I can’t really agree with the cries of horror. It is vital for the Joker character that he is unknown, thus they really had to sell that he was dead. I doubt we’ve seen the last of Cameron. He nailed the role and he’s also in the correct age range to portray the character as he, David and Camren grow up. I don’t think they’ll let his obvious talent go to waste. Before everyone goes, “but, but… he is dead…” See above. This is a comic book show. Bizarre plot twists come with the territory. Do I know how they’ll swing it? Nope, not a clue. I just think they will.

Frain’s deliberate overacting selling the hero part was absolutely hilarious, especially when you know what a strong performer he really is. It’s simply another move to get into the old-school cartoon feel. Jerome killing the vice-mayor was obviously deliberate. I’d suspect Theo’s setting himself up for the post.

Alfred hitting on Lee was supremely embarrassing. I had a really hard time watching it… my face goes all red from scenes like that… which obviously meant it was well done. Wish I’ll stop cringing in my seat soon.

Bruce to Selina, “I’ve missed you.” Well, we’ve certainly all missed their interaction, I think. Just my opinion, but Bruce only really feels complete with Selina and in another sense with Alfred, and vice-versa, Selina only feels like the real Selina with him. The actors bring out the best in each other.

Thanks for the episode! If anyone actually reads and reblogs this tripe, I might even review the next week as well ;-)

Fun fact is that Camren (the kid playing Selina) is actually active on tumblr and thus far nobody's scared her away. She doesn't have a shit-ton of followers or reblogs either, which I find a bit strange, but I guess she's a rather anonymous person for being an actress.

Saw the ads last season. Now that Fox didn't cancel it five episodes in as they are wont to do for...well anything that isn't an immediate blockbuster, I think I'll give this a shot.

Their ratings are stable. Both 2.01 and 2.02 scored 1.60. I am cautiously optimistic about its chances to survive long-term.

Gotham ratings for first four episodes are 1.6, 1.6, 1.5 and 1.5. Holding steady around those numbers more or less guarantees a third season especially seeing that Minority Report is dropping like a bomb.

In other news the Gotham fandom is going ballistic about Alfred in last episode :)
