I know it's a day early for the memorials, but this article came up on my news feed. It's a quirky and oft-forgotten story of 9/11.

'Vivid' memories persist of Korean Air Flight 085, Whitehorse's scare on 9/11

I believe this is the only instance in Canadian history where the Prime Minister gave the green light for our military to shoot down a civilian aircraft. To this day, it's still largely unknown why the Korean Air pilot did what he did. Could have ended in tragedy.

I think I remember hearing about that as I was glued to the radio/tv that day. I'm sure it wasn't completely dismissed in Canada, but it was here. Especially since nothing untoward actually happened.

How is it we don’t have the pilot’s explanation?

The only story is that it was a "translation error". Apparently the pilot originally texted "HJK" when discussing his flight plan with his corporate office. When the company that processes airline-ground communications noticed this (they were obviously paying attention to all comms on 9/11), they alerted NORAD.

Alaska Air Traffic Control contacted the plane and asked them to activate the hijack transponder code if they were, in fact, in distress. Typically, if a plane was not being hijacked, the pilot would ask why air traffic control was requesting the hijack code. But in this case, the Korean Air pilot simply complied with the request and switched their transponder to the hijack code.

No explanation of the "HJK" text or why the pilot simply turned on the hijack transponder code has ever been supplied.

I only shared the story because it came up on my news feed.

Anyone should feel free to share their memories/recollections of 9/11 in this thread.

My memories. I was working in a small office for the township assessor - maybe six of us all together. I was already at my desk when a coworker came in late and exclaimed that a plane flew into the world trade center. Just a couple weeks prior to this, a Cessna type plane had flown into the local hospital without too much damage. Just pilot error or something. Certainly not an attack. And so, that was my first thought - that the plane was a Cessna or something similar and just an accident. It wasn't until another employee came in and said the second plane hit. That's when people started getting nervous. Then came the news that a 4th plane heading to Chicago had fallen off the radar. That's when we were sent home for the day.

Ok, I am annoyed. My favorite 9/11 celebration video was taken down by the person who posted it. It had all the people leaping to their deaths. I totally prepared early by marking it before all the new shit hit for the holiday, and then it was gone.

    My whole 9/11 is ruined.

That one is pretty good, but it needs some of the images from my favorite one. There are some scenes where it shows the burny areas with the people hanging out, and some nice multiple jumper scenes. There is an especially nice one of some guy who tries to shimmy down one of the cement channels in the building and loses his footing and falls.

If I ever find it again I am going to have to set it to yakety sax. I think it would go really well, and probably make the demons in hell chuckle a little.

What I get after all this time (has it really been 20 years?) is that people still don't get it. I'll never forget that day and its aftermath. Crazy day to be sure. And a lot of people got killed in the aftermath or even during it, but now we live in this surveillance state that's never going to go away.

I remember the anger about it, how for a very short time we were united for the first time in my life And Instead of capitalizing on that, here we are.

So is that a game? Am I supposed to get a bunch of people in a shopping cart and crash it into the display to win a prize? Maybe I organize with other shoppers so we can hit both towers separately? Is there a model of the pentagon somewhere else in the store we need to crash into?

Am I the only one confused?

One thing, though, is that we weren't actually united. There were plenty of white Americans who used it as an excuse to immediately step up their harassment of any other American who looked vaguely middle eastern.

Someone seems to have wiped the 15 years worth of comments on that one. :garamet:

There used to be more of them, but as Tererun said, they've all gotten memory hole'd.

Yep. There was a few weeks of kumbayaah between the still-existant middle class suburbanites of whiteness and Dems forgot how angry they were that Bush stole the election, and then they too were on the "kill all towelheads" bandwagon.

Then, you had shit like this

People were not united that day. That is what the jingoists tell us. Watching it on TV was not being there. The people in nebraska (or most anywhere else) were not in any danger. Everyone jumped on the victim wagon like they were.

There was no unity that day. 9/11 had about the same unity as a trump tweet. It was a fucking disaster, and everyone looked at it.

on 9/11 when I got to work in NY less than an hour drive from the trade centers I talked to one of my coworkers. He was worried for what all of this meant for him because he took his family out of pakistan to come to america so his wife and daughters could have freedom. He knew that dream was getting tarnished that day because of the hate that was coming his way from that event. He was a nice guy who believed in the idealistic freedoms of america but knew that the racism was going to get so much worse.

Was that your feeling that day? I don't think so, and many people in the US used that event as an excuse to assault, harass, and even kill muslims. I did not want to do any of those things. I was never united with war with Islamic countries because Islam.

George W. Bush actually gave a pretty decent speech at the United 93 memorial.

He definitely referenced the division within America today without getting too "political".

I always thought he was an asshole when he was a sitting president. Little did I know that things could actually get much, much, much worse. :sigh:

Not even that - I got shit from a few cunts at TBBS for posting "hang on, guys, we're coming!" when Britain was sending firefighters and rescue teams to help with the immediate aftermath because "America doesn't need help from anyone, and fuck you for implying it!".

I learned just a few years ago that international teams almost always offer help during our national disasters and we always turn it down for exactly that reason.

    Shameful :jayzus:

Oh, he can still suck dicks in hell for all I care. He can do the shiny hero part of Presidenting well enough (provided one uses 3rd grade vocabulary words in the speech), but he got the ball rolling on a number of things that led us right to Trumpian politics.

I'll give him credit for this: on the surface, he was very clear that the "enemy" was not everyday American Muslims but the ones who were trying to blow us up. Unlike Trump, who wanted to tar and feather all minorities with the same brush.
