Dude....I had no idea! Most people have heard of Eureka California. But there is also a Yreka California!
I was watching bare knuckle boxing from Wyoming and a fighter was from Yreka California. I thought it was a typo or something! So I googled it and sure enough, there is also a Yreka California. They are a four hour drive from each other, so I suppose nobody could mix them up but still....too close for comfort on that spelling IMHO.

One is a Greek word meaning "I have found it!" The other is a Shasta Indian word meaning "white mountain." You want strange town names? Try Pennsylvania. Bird-in-hand, Intercourse, Climax (one ought to lead to the other, wouldn't you say?), Noodle Doosie... ;)

If I ever win the lottery I'll buy property in California (better be a big fucking payout with those real estate prices amiright?) and build a town called Yooreeka.

Hard to shower if you're homeless.

yes I know this, but it would have ruined the joke. I guess Santa didn't bring you a sense of humor this year.
Weird because Santa has had what.....a dozen or so decades of Christmases to bring you one?

I'm (more or less) from Northern California, and knew Eureka was Greek for "I found it" (the ol' Archmides-in-the-bathtub story), and always just assumed that Yreka was of similar origin. It's certainly pronounced oddly given its spelling: why-REE-ka.

The Wikipedia article on Yreka says the origin of the name is as garamet wrote: the Shasta name (waika, meaning "white mountain" or "north mountain") for Mount Shasta, though Mark Twain apparently told this story...
