Now the TrekBBS isn't what it used to be and TNZ is overrun by liberals.

But still I find it galling.

I was banned basically because the moderators got tired of warning other members after they would threaten to contact the school I teach at and try to harm my career by quoting things I had posted in the past out of context.

Now, once I returned to the TrekBBS I never updated my profile or any information. I never revealed there what school I teach at (it changed while I was banned) or what town I live in.

    Still,

Members such as Starship Polaris (Dennis Bailey) and Squeakyfm tracked down where I was using sources outside the TrekBBS and repeatedly referenced where I worked.

Yet they banned me from the TNZ.

I find it especially annoying as I had violated no rules. I even started a thread to make nice with the Obama supporters and agreed publicly with Starship Polaris and Cleverwombat a few times.

    I still don't understand it.

I always wanted to stay with the TrekBBS because I like the handiness of the Trek related forums.

Not to mention that I've got a story in Fan Fiction that I've been updating now and then.

    It irritates me greatly.

That's why you don't post you name, your family's names, your address and your phone number on a BBS  Told you back when you did it that it's a bad idea, and now I'll stop at told you so.

The things you post can very easily construed as trolling. I myself am not sure if you believe even your least aggravating stuff.

At the very least they should ban all those others as well.

Except for the fact that none of that is accessible at the TrekBBS anymore.

People had to go off the board to find personal information out about me.

And people jumped on me about my teaching profession when not a thing in the thread was remotely related to it.

Things went on along the lines of

Dayton3: I think Barack Obama will be a one term president. The U.S. hasn't had three consecutive two termers in 200 years

Starship Polaris/Squeakyfm/CleverWombat: You are a fucking poor excuse for a history teacher. Someone call his school and tell them what an idiot they have working for them!!!!!!

In my humbale opinion, ANY and ALL threats to use a persons real-life info against them should bring an immediate and permanent ban.

Whatever the villainy of the target (short of having confessed to child porn or some such), there are some things you simply do not do.

Starship Polaris has always been a snobbish troll.

Squiggy used to be very funny but now he seems to just act like a squawk box for the lefties. He seems desperate for their approval.

Clever Wombat is just angry and a bit paranoid. But I may be confusing him with CaptainKit.

In any case, the trend these days is to attack the poster rather than the post itself.

And? We do that here in the Red Room all of the time. It's not as if it's shocking and disdainful, the same thing goes on here at Wordforge. Doesn't mean it's right, doesn't mean it's wrong, but let's not pretend we're something they're not in that respect.

As for being kicked, Dayton, you had to know it was going to happen. You do troll, a lot, and while I don't approve of how other people treat you in that respect, you've pretty much earned it by their rules. Does that mean everyone else is innocent? No, but it doesn't mean you weren't fairly booted according to their rules. And Dayton, after everything you've seen happen here, you should know better than to post personal information like telephone numbers, addresses and job locations.

Dennis Bailey is apparently HIV positive, so you might not have to deal with him in a few years, if you're lucky. :bergman:

    Sorry.

I don't consider posting things that other people disagree with to be trolling.

And I never updated any personal information on the TrekBBS. While it might've not been wise to post things several years ago, you can't put the genie back in the bottle.

I'll never understand this desire to harm people based on their internet postings.

Dude, some people have good memory. I can remember your RL name, and you haven't posted it here in ages.

Also, in case one can't remember: how else would you been found if not by googling your username and finding stuff with your real name attached to it. From there, it's just a very small step to find everything about you.

Which, btw, is why I refuse to be put up on company homepages etc. With a little help from Google Cache, this lets snoop dogs retrace basically your every step.

I'm not saying it isn't easy to do.

I'm saying it is against every rule the TrekBBS has.

Posting off site information about a member.

Yet they kick the member who is being attacked because warning the attackers and rules violators is too much of a hassle.

Disagreeing is one thing. Dayton, I remember you saying, a long time ago, that your purpose in TNZ was to get people riled up, to get them angry at you. That's trolling.

Some people are just like that. I don't agree with it either.
You just need to be careful. Wordforge and TrekBBS will always be connected with one another as long as there are people going back and forth, people like you and me, who post there and here prolifically. I would never do such a thing, mind you, but there are people who live to ruin others' lives.

Dayton, many a moon back you baldly stated you were there to win arguments by any means necessary, so they're not going to give you a great deal of leeway are they?

You exist to piss people off, so don't be too surprised when shown the door.

That said, I recall Dennis Bailey being a right snotty twat. Kind of person who if you ran over by accident, you'd reverse back over on purpose.

    I want to win arguments.

And I honestly think that in order to change a persons mind you have to first get to them on a gut level. Force them to dig deep to defend their position in order to show the inadequacy of it.

But maybe I'm too old school. I was taught debate tactics some two decades ago and a mark of a clever debater was to calmly make an outrageous attack that led to the opposition losing their composer.

A person who gave in to emotion was marked as immature and not worthy of serious consider.

Now all we have are emotional people who start shrieking the moment anything challenges. them.

You can't. Nobody can. Not on the stuff we discuss here. Try quantum physics and bring proof for your arguments. In a contest of opinions or what you try to sell as your opinion, you can never win. Should have noticed that by now.

BBS' are WAR I tells you! WAR! Winning is not enough, you gotta bury them!
    So, you're trolling, then. Really.

No, now you have mostly college educated people who don't watch Springer. Your 'tactics' only work with stupid audiences, everybody with an IQ above room temperature calls your bluff. And let's be honest here - subtlety and elegant rhetoric traps are not your strong points. And I ain't even talking about the twisted views you present - a toddler could probably take those apart if s/he cared enough.

Funny, btw, how you defend yourself here despite everybody telling you what's not a good idea. Obviously you think you've it all figured out like some know-it-all teenager. If you think we're all idiots for telling you why it's not a good idea to troll and attach your real name to it for years, don't come here whining and expecting sympathy. Be happy that no real psycho got 'railed up' by you and decided to pay you a visit in person.

Frankly Dayton, you're never going to live down that stupid "using moderators as weapons" comment you made in QSF years ago. People don't like being used and once you started notifications on people and wanting them warned, guess what the first thing everyone thought was? Any notification by you is going to be suspect from now until eternity after that remark.

TNZ is an optional forum at TrekBBS. The moderators there have the right to boot anyone they feel is there to simply troll or cause trouble. You were allowed in on a provisional basis and you blew it. All by yourself.

I do think that far from being a place for a free exchange of ideas largely free from moderation that The Neutral Zone evolved into a place where an unwritten rule became something like

"If people disagree with you by a 20 to 1 margin, then you should just get with the program and either change your views or stop posting".

I was actually told this pretty much by a TrekBBS member who I eventually came to like a great deal. Lizardlaugh IIRC was her name.

Like I said, as far as Star Trek goes I like the format. How everything is divided up neatly.

I always enjoyed starting a thread say in Trek Tech then bouncing over to TNZ and posting there while waiting for someone to respond in the Tech forum.

But I was always sentimental about TNZ. I was posting there when my daughter was born, when my mother died, when 9-11 happened, during the 2000 election controversy, when I lost my job, when I got a new job, when I lost my job, when I got a new job, when I lost my job, when I got a new job, when I lost....well, you get the idea.

    It's not a bad place.
They say the same thing about WF, but I love it here, too.

TrekBBS is kind of a home on the internet for me. I have my own board, and I still spend lots of time at TBBS. I'm used to it, it's like a comfortable pair of shoes. I love Wordforge because it's fun and less restrained, and you get as good as you give. The difference is that TNZ is heavily liberal, and the RR is heavily conservative/libertarian. I can see a news article at TBBS, get their opinions, come here and get a totally different perspective. I actually like that.

All I can say is that people have their reasons. To me, one is not better than the other, and I enjoy visiting both. I value the friends I have here, and the friends I have at TBBS. I'm happy either way, really.

There is a difference in this case however. He has been banned simply because the mods do not want to deal with those who violate the rules in regards to him.

There is nothing wrong with pissing people off in TNZ. There is a problem when the person you piss off wants to cost you your real life job. There's an even bigger problem when the people who run the place ban you so they don't have to deal with the person making those threats.
