Well done to Ireland, first country in the world to take this decision by referendum.

MF didn't get a vote incidentally since he's from NI. I assume he'd be against this.

Also, Ireland only just legalised homosexuality in 1993, so we've come a long way very quickly.

Yeah,so I guess women's reproductive rights are on the table next, right?

    ....right?

I'm glad to see Ireland's government moving away from the Catholic Church's influence,in any form.

The same proportion of US states have gay marriage as is found in UK constituent countries. I suspect we'll be at 100% long before you folks.

Yhep, the white Euro countries are slowly but surely going to pull away from them, and then they'll only have the third world countries, and with them as the majority, they're going to start demanding a brown-skinned pope, then then shit's really gonna get interesting. :corn:

Yeah, trying to be clever again aren't we? Civil Partnerships, which carry all the same legal rights as marriage, save for the word itself, has been law in all countries of the UK for a decade. The Marriage Act 2013 simply allowed same-sex couple the rights to enter into a union with the name marriage, with the exception of Northerm Ireland, which, as I say, has had civil partnerships in law for a decade. Of the states that don't allow same-sex marriage how many allow same sex unions?

Civil partnership <> marriage. If so, people would have dropped civic marriage, leaving it to churches.

Well done? Are you kidding? Irish politicians are fucking cowards for letting this go to referendum. They could have made the right choice years ago.

No, the constitution defines marriage and a constitutional change requires a referendum.

Really? The Irish constitution is so narrow that it actually excludes gays? Most countries with legalized gay marriage (welcome to the club, Ireland, although more than a decade late) have constitutions that were interpreted broadly enough that banning gay marriage was deemed unconstitutional by the high courts.

In any event, the fact that a referendum was legally required simply proves my point about Danny Leach's worthless observation. :bergman:

It had defined marriage as being between a man and a woman. It doesn't any more.
