You are never going to win that argument at wordforge or with the American people in general. Because most Americans are convinced that "if sex is good then the more you can get of it must be even better". Thus you are never going to win on anything that smacks of limiting a persons pursuit of sexual satisfaction.

Well first it is for all relationships, not just marriage and secondly it applies to the relationship, not person. So even if one person stays monogamous but the other has a secret extra-relationship encounter then the relationship is considered non-monogamous.

Obviously the majority of cases are non-consentual non-monogamy (aka cheating), but there are surprising numbers of swingers/polyamorists/etc.

exactly! And you guys out there in wordforge land who think your woman won't mess around on you? Shhhheeeeeeeeeet.....sell that to somebody born yesterday!
I'm not judging - I don't blame the ladies! They have needs too. And I totally admire their ability to keep their mouth shut and be discreet so they don't bring down the whole house of cards. I've know a few women in the army who could date (and mate!) several guys without them ever finding out about each other. You just gotta respect that! :salute:
Yeah, I have a thing for crafty smart scheming lustful women - so sue me!

 unless it's "forbidden fruit" I just don't think having other partners would be too exciting to be honest. It would be a "fish in a barrel" kind of thing. No thanks to swinging. :jayzus:

Monogamy has nothing to do with any of the things on that list. (In addition, your correlation very likely gets causality wrong.)

One could argue that it is habits and character traits that lead one to have monogamous relationships also lead to other successes in life. Deferring gratification, selflessness, commitment to long term goals, focus, self discipline and maturity.

Ah, yes, Packard, but I wasn't talking about the liberal species: Homo Sapien Imagicanus, was talking regular humans in RL.

So these mythical regular humans, so far, include no one who posted in this thread, right? Where do they all live? Mars?

There has never been any evidence that Presidents Obama, Bush II, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Eisenhower, Truman, Hoover, Coolidge, or Taft ever had a mistress.

Sure people have speculated for years. Democratic operative Donna Brazille tried to start a rumor about George H.W. Bush for example but there has never been any actual proof that any of those had a mistress.

That's hardly most, and Ike's mistresses were rather well-known. One of whom was his personal secretary during WWII.

That was only a rumor and years later people who have analyzed it question whether it was even possible as Eisenhower was apparently never alone with his personal secretary sufficiently for there to be any kind of sexual relationship between them.

Guess they never bothered to interview Ike's driver, then. He told my brother some rather "interesting" stories about the pair and swore he'd never vote Republican because of it.

Kathleen Helen Summersby BEM (née MacCarthy-Morrogh; 23 November 1908 – 20 January 1975), known as Kay Summersby, was a member of the British Mechanised Transport Corps during World War II, who served as a chauffeur and later as personal secretary to Dwight D. Eisenhower during his period as Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force in command of the Allied forces in north west Europe. They were together a great deal until the war ended, when Eisenhower cut ties and returned to the United States. It is generally agreed that Summersby and Eisenhower became extremely close during the war, and some writers have suggested that they had a sexual relationship, although people who knew both of them at the time have rejected that claim, as have most of Eisenhower's biographers.

It would be all those guys cool with other guys banging their wife that fall within the "Imagicanus" subspecies. Same for most of those theoretical women who'd claim they don't care if their joint resources might potentially be diverted down other, um, avenues.

And until there was DNA evidence, most of Jefferson's biographers weren't terribly convinced that he and Sally Hemmings got their freak on. But putting all that aside, again, your listing was still not most American Presidents. Or even a majority of them.

I never claimed my list was most or a majority of American presidents. It was the post I was responding to that seemed to claim that a majority or most American presidents had mistresses. I was clearly refuting that.

YOU were the one that posted

You do realize that nearly every American President had at least one mistress.

    I clearly refuted that claim.

So again, the people posting in this thread are the ones you declare to be mere figments of the imagination. The people not visible are the ones you declare to be real.

It's one thing to routinely converse with imaginary people, or to put your trust in invisible other realities. But doing both and setting the two in political opposition to one another demonstrates special effort.

Not quite, just identifying that imo Anc's perception of real people, as he described them, is delusional. This reasoned opinion is based on observed reality of mankind, not imagination of how I think people might be in some fantasy world that applies to very few (or extrapolating my own views onto everyone else). For example, Bezos' divorce only tends to support my view and refute yours.

No, that's called being an adult and being mature enough to know how to break an unhealthy cycle. Especially if they have children they still need to raise.

I think that is something that's almost impossible to quantify one way or the other. My best guess would be the majority of relationships are in fact monogamous but that's probably slowly trending down

If you have children why not simply wait a few years until the children are grown. It really isn't that long you know.

That's not good for the children though. They can sense that something is wrong and will likely blame themselves for it, especially if the parents get divorced as soon as they're older. This becomes something they'll carry for the rest of their lives and affect any relationship they have as adults.
