Now that Dayton is gone, can I reveal PM’s from him?
Did he write you love poems?
....that might be a federal offense if he did
I've always been of the opinion that there should be no rule against revealing PMs someone sent you, but I'd wait for an admin to speak up.
There's ways of doing that, but not in a public forum unless as a last resort (like 14th Doctor and the Jamie Whistler shit that the staff did nothing about and that some even made worse).
He's a banned member, certainly, but I'm on the fence about publicly sharing those PMs. @Bickendan and @Dr. Krieg can weigh in with their thoughts.
Feel free to message us if you want to share the nature of the PMs he sent you.
Oh, let's make them public. He sent me a couple I'd like to share with the group.
Is there any purpose to publishing them, other than to antagonize somebody who is no longer here to fight back?
As a broader question, why should anyone be unable to publish them?
In the real world if someone sends me an unsolicited email or letter am I restricted from sharing it with others?
In my case, yes. I’m not wanting to do it to piss him off, I’m wanting to do it so that I can show he was just as petty in PMs as he was in public. You know, as a bit of a rebuke against certain people who still post here.
Only write an email if you’re comfortable having someone plaster it on a billboard.
That’s all you need to know about private messages.
There's no doubt about that.
Is this a banning or a public execution? Quite a little of both I should say. His PM's dragged across the cobbles like so many entrails.
Put them in the Blue Room and all discussion of the PM's stays in that one thread.
If people want to peruse a carcass than have at it.
It's up to the admins/owners, of course, but I'm not comfortable with the idea. I get it, he was awful to people in his private messages as he was out here, but that's why we also established Rule #5.
I think it's a really bad idea. He's already gone; what else could be gained by proving yet again how badly he acted? Remember that whenever you share private information about someone, you're also piercing the privacy of everyone involved with them, such as Dayton's family in this case. Is it worth it?
We have enough we can mock him over if we so choose. No need to throw fuel on the bonfire.
Ethically-speaking, posting PMs publicly is okay only if all parties involved give consent, and I doubt Dayton will consent.
Paraphrasing said PMs might be a nice gray area though. Locutus of Borg at TrekBBS did that with a PM I sent him years ago and apparently everyone was cool with it.
Simple question, what's the point of private messages if they aren't private?
Allowing staff access to review legitimate complaints is one thing, posting them publicly to further humiliate someone is another.
Dayton was and without doubt will remain a foolish man, but he harms himself without our help.
SHOW US THE RECEIPTS
Speaking as tech admin/board policy historian (read: other admins can override me on this but I'm telling you how it has been to date): No. We've had a longstanding policy about keeping private messages private based on the no revealing someone else's off-board and/or Blue Room personal info. You're welcome to share any that you sent (minus quoted bits of replies), but not what you've received without consent of the other party.
Feel free to forward any that you think require staff attention to a moderator or admin. (Unlikely in this case, but a useful thing in general.)
As hilarious as they may be, I'd vote against it.
PM-it's right there in the P, for "private".
Having thought on it, I’m in agreement with the consensus that they shouldn’t be shared publicly. He’s gone and posting them would just be beating a dead horse.
A big, dumb, autistic horse.
Well, in that case, here's the reply I sent to the only PM Dayton ever sent me:
"Dayton, it's cool that you've acknowledged this side of yourself and want to explore, but, offering me $5 to fuck you in the ass? That's seriously lowballing it. At least throw me a $20..."
I got a PM from him once that said "HEHAW HEHAW." I am pretty sure it was meant for someone else and I share it so that whoever it was gets his message.
wwat woud trumnp do
"a rebuke against certain people"? At least we know you're not petty. Jesus..
