Did you know that M*A*S*H had a character named Spearchucker Jones?

You can look it up if you don't believe me.

And it's not like the series was made back in in the 1940s, when Looney Tunes and Disney were cranking out racist stuff on a regular basis.

    M*A*S*H ran from 1972 to 1983. WTF!

I only ever watched a few episodes but realized pretty quickly how overrated and shitty the show was.

But I had not idea it was full of a bunch of racist fucks.

P.S. - this is Red Room material because it directly relates to the conversation about BLM and Cancel Culture.

I think they realized that after the first season (Jones was a character in the book/movie) and got rid of the character.

There's a huge difference between the book/movie/first season and later seasons. But the Jones character was never meant to be a racist stereotype (he was a surgeon, after all). The dynamic just didn't work as well for a sitcom and there wasn't enough for him to do. That's why there was always an extra bed in the Swamp for the rest of the series.

Btw, Dr. John McIntyre got his nickname when he was caught in a restroom with a beauty pageant contestant on a cross-country train voyage. Her explanation for being there was, "He trapped me." :?:

The movie and first seasons of the show definitely have not aged well. They were misogynistic, racist, and homophobic.

but it was the typical thinking of the time. This is how humans learn. Look back at where we were and continue to move forward.

Wow. If that pisses you off, stay away from All in the Family.;)

I never cared for MASH either. Watched a few episodes and figured it wasn't my cup of tea. (The guy running around in women's clothing schtick wore thin quick) But worse show ever? There have been far more horrible on T.V.

I forget a lot of the movie, however I love the series. Sure there is some prejudice of the times. Hawkeye was a great liberal hero for the time. A lot of the message about caring for another race came out of that show. Especially when they fought to save the enemy lives while being under fire. Some of that bullshit that people object to now was purposefully put in there as an example of what is.

We are viewing these series through time from a different angle. I personallyu would put MASH as a must see for a person who wants to understand the wars that happened. Showing the bad parts of history through the interpretation of the writers of the time is a glimpse into the society of the time.

Not when you really think about it. M*A*S*H was a critical and viewer favourite, supposedly espousing a liberal worldview but all the while sending an insidious message of racism.

At least All in the Family didn't even try to hide it.

M*A*S*H is pure evil, and so are its fans. :bergman:

This is why modern white people can't go too far back in a time machine before being grossed out by their ancestors, and black people can't use a time machine at all.

And people from the future have put a barrier around 2020.

Yes, the time was racist. I think MASH did a great job of showing the tragedy in racism.

The backstory in the book and movie is that the nickname comes from him literally being good at the javelin (the character is an athlete), and the double entendre is intentional.

M*A*S*H generally set about to deliberately subvert the prejudices of the time. The early episodes are probably most problematic because of their uncritical acceptance of gender stereotypes; this didn't start to change until later in the series (when they started to let Margaret be an actual three-dimensional character).

I think it’s more about the characterizations in early episodes not matching up with what developed later. They had Radar smoking cigars and spying on the nurses in the shower until they realized they could get more mileage out of him as a hopelessly naive virgin.

Supposedly, they ditched the character because there were no African-American brain surgeons in MASH units during the Korean War.

There’s definitely a pretty sadistic streak of misogyny in the doctors’ treatment of “Hot Lips” in the movie, which carried over into early episodes of the series.

A movie and TV series made in the 70s and 80s, that took place during the Korean war, has content that is considered misogynist and racist by today's standards?

    I am utterly shocked!

Exactly. Time and place, or that dirty librul word "context."

Butterfly McQueen was hounded until her death for her portrayal of Prissy in Gone with the Wind... possibly one of the most authentic portrayals in that super-sanitized film.

"Black people don't talk like that!" was the principal complaint. Um, yeah, well, a young woman born into slavery, denied by law to learn to read and write, who'd probably never left the plantation until Scarlett dragged her to Atlanta, would have talked like that. Listen to the audio recordings of some of the last surviving slaves (taped as part of a filthy liberal WPA project) and learn something. :bailey:

While I'm about 90 percent sure you're joking, my mom no shit thought Archie Bunker was the worst character ever created since Jar Jar Binks and told me the show was dirybadwrong.

Thankfully, being a latchkey kid had its perks and I was able to catch reruns while she was at work and realize the show very clearly placed Archie in the wrong more often than not. Like maybe it could stand to use the N word a slight bit less but the meat of the series still stands.

Plus, Tamar once told me Carol O'Connor became rather outspoken against racism and injustice after the series, so there's that.
