This came up at work. Apparently the word "picnic" is racist now, at least according to some, and despite what Snopes and Wikipedia say about it. Your thoughts?

Needs more context. I can't say I've ever encountered the word being used in a racist manner, but I guess it could be.

Apparently some of the easily-outraged are claiming that it means "Pick a Ni***r," as in "for a lynching."

The circle game now means "white power", so I am not surprised if picnic is racist too somehow.

Now, it's certainly possible for a word with no inherent racial meaning to be used in a racist manner. See: spade, jig, renege.

I think words like "Oreo" and "banana" and "Twinkie" and "apple" weren't inherently racist, until people started using them in that context. "Wypipo" never seemed racist to me, until I saw white people here saying it was racist and offensive to them.

So, while I've never thought of "picnic" as a racist term, I suppose anything is possible, thanks to how language evolves. Just like how "naggers" became a thing after that South Park episode.

But I'm guessing you don't see it that way?

Picnic, Oreos, Twinkies, bananas, and apples? Why is racism making me fucking hungry?

I guess I will snack on some pretzel sticks.......Oh shit that is probably racist too. Racists ruin everything more than guys named Adam.

Picnic is racist like “rule of thumb” is sexist — only for those who are looking for something to be offended by.

It's actually kind of the opposite, right? 'Rule of thumb' does have an extremely sexist origin, but is now usually understood to mean something different, including a false etymology to motivate that new meaning. 'Picnic' isn't racist originally, but has now acquired a false etymology that suggests it is.

Which just goes to show you that you can't call things racist or sexist or ensure that they're not without considering who says it to whom with which intention.

You have it backwards. The "sexist" origin is the false etymology. It (most likely) comes from the idea of using your thumb as an approximate measure of length, instead of using a yardstick.

Interesting. I had it exactly backwards, just as you say; I was convinced the wife-beating meaning was original.

    The name Lanzman is racist.

Because the fourth letter is a 'z.'

    Which rhymes with 'tree.'

Which were sometimes used to lynch black people.

You people are so drowning in privilege that you never noticed that gross injustice, did you?

I heard about an office somewhere that banned the word "flipchart" (one of those oversized books of charts with vertically turning pages that are frequently used in business presentations) because, apparently, "flip" can be a derogatory term for a Filipino.

Perhaps, but is it even possible to be racist toward white people or do they have it coming to them? Assuming it is possible, is all racism equally bad?

rule of thumb actually has a sexist, abusive, and racist connotation being it came from the size of the stick you were allowed to whip someone with. Picnic does not actually have an abusive origin like that. I would say it has become something new over time, but it did come from a bad place.
