They referred to them as the "Duras" sisters. Yet IIRC it was established in TNG that Klingons designate their families by the name of their father. "Duras" was the brother of Lursa and Bator. The father of Duras and the sisters was NOT "Duras"..

I know that. I though it was supposed to the "the House of whoever their father was".

His name was given at one point and I'm pretty sure it wasn't "Duras".

In that case it still wouldn't be the "House of Duras" as Duras was dead before Lursa and Bator were introduced in TNG

Picard: “Worf do you know Lursa and Betor Daughter of Ja’rod?

    Worf: “Who?”

    Riker: “Duras’ sisters.”

Worf: “ah, the Duras sisters, what about them?”

Picard: “They’re our to get you.”

It’s really not that hard to understand.
ETA: Duras is the last living patriarch in the line, so it’s still his house.

I don’t think they ever made it official. The houses must be transferred by ceremony IIRC. Maybe it was and we never saw it. Maybe in Generations everyone was just used to calling them the Duras sisters. Weren’t they all stripped of honor anyway?

Toral was illegitimate; maybe he could serve as figurehead but custom dictated that the house not take on his name?

It could be that house names aren't governed by any kind of legal convention, but rather by the preference of whoever controls them. A patriarch may choose to call the house after himself upon succeeding his father. But Lursa and B'Etor were the powers behind the throne, and would have bristled at the idea of naming the house for their illegitimate nephew, who they were mostly just using as a pawn.

(Is it referred to as the House of Duras in DS9 after Lursa and B'Etor's death? I usually skip the Klingon episodes.)

If that is the case I can see why they would keep it the "House of Duras" since Duras was the one who actually was a claimant to the leadership of the Klingon Empire.

Gotta be honest though. It appears the Klingon Empire in the modern era didn't exactly have decent leadership. Dax herself basically told Worf this in DS9.
