as I've said before as a vet (and still working for the army as a contractor) I am not a fan of any formalized "dog & pony" events. :brood:
Here's an interesting parade tidbit: at one really big World War One "war is over" parade (might have been in NYC) many of the guys who just fucking fought in the war were not even in the parade! :brood: The army had REMF units that never went overseas marching in the parade because the real soldiers' uniforms & equipment and bodies & spirits were WORN THE FUCK OUT AND BEAT DOWN so they figured fresh, enthusiastic, non-traumatized soldiers would present a more inspiring image. :brood:

So, as I understand it, Trump got the idea for a parade last year after watching a military parade in France conducted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the US entry into WWI and to celebrate the annual Bastille Day holiday.

So, France has military parades, complete with tanks. France isn't a 3rd world shithole, or a despotic communist regime, or a banana republic.

But because Trump wants to have a parade on Veterans Day, all the lefties have freaked out.

There aren't even gonna be any tanks, because city officials are afraid the streets will be damaged. France rolls out the tanks, but no tanks for Trump.

So I ask, what's all the fuss about? Trump Derangement Syndrome?

Parades aren't a new idea in the United States. They've happened before, just not lately.

You don't see the difference between this and "I am going to have a great, great parade. It will be huge - the most beautiful parade in history, and the taxpayers will pay for it"?

    Yeah, no, you wouldn't.

I like fly overs of military aircraft. Hell we used to have them in my home towns Pine Tree Festival. C-130s and F-16s over one memorable parade. And this was years before Bill Clinton became president.

If you can have that at an obscure annual parade in a hole in the wall tiny Arkansas town, why can't you have it for the president in Washington D.C.?

That parade commemorates an important local industry and the lumbermen who have the most dangerous job in America. What exactly will the Donnie Parade commemorate?

That's not to mention the proportional costs.

@Dayton3 , clearly you didn't understand that last post. Let me try to simplify it for you:

    garamet posts in a thread.
Another poster says "I don't believe you. Prove it."
garamet provides link(s) to her source(s) of information.

    Dayton3 posts in a thread.
garamet says "I don't believe you. Prove it."
Dayton3 says "You prove what I just said."

Note, Dayton3 does not say "Disprove what I just said." That would actually promote further discussion.

    Does that help?

I've actually gone the other way as I've gotten older. I've always known that putting on a uniform (of any type) doesn't automatically make someone a "hero." One of the teenage kids at my church just took his oath last Friday. He joined the USAF with the eventual goal of being a 3D0X4 (Computer Systems Programming Specialist). Another is taking his oath for the Army in a couple of weeks. He's going to be a 27D (Paralegal Specialist) with hopes of eventually moving to 42R (Musician).

These kids aren't heroes. I hope they're never put in a situation where they could even become heroes. But, I've met my fair share of cops, firemen, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines that are douchebags. You'll earn my respect because of who you are, not because you wear a uniform.

I hope the kids do well in their military service! :salute: You know them better than I do - I hope neither are infected with the "quit" virus. :( A lot of kids seem to have it these days - my son served recently from 2012-2016 and when he told me how many people just give up....quit....pack it in....I was amazed. You meet all the standards (no small feat!) then just QUIT when things get challenging? :unuts: Some of these kids have apparently never been yelled at or forced to do more than they think they are capable of. :jayzus:

    Here's what I see:

Leftists who despise the American military hate the idea of celebrating the armed forces, and that hatred is only intensified by the fact that their supervillain Trump is the one who wants this parade.

Trying to justify that Trump hate by whining about spending taxpayer money on it is akin to partisan hacks on both sides keeping count of how many times the President goes golfing or estimating how much it cost in fuel every time Obama flew AF1 to Hawaii for vacation.

If we're going to argue about how to spend tax dollars, my position will be that not one dime should be given to Planned Parenthood. I don't want my tax dollars used to support the murder of innocent babies.

We get it Margaret, you hate Trump. You hate the military. America is the Great Satan and we're to blame for all the world's problems. Trump is a fascist, blah blah blah.

If Trump really had ushered in a new era of American Fascism, you and your wannabe bohemian associates woould have already been rounded up for State Reprogramming.

As far as I can remember virtually all presidents have had military displays conducted for their benefit.

Carter boarded a carrier and had the Navy conduct full up mock airstrikes and surface attacks supposedly simply because he wanted to "see what the Navy could really do".

This coming from a man who graduated from Annapolis and served 7 years on active duty in the Navy.

In 1988 as we was close to leaving office, Secretary of Defense Frank Carlucci organized and enormous military display for President Reagan simply because Reagan had been such a good friend to the U.S. military.

In 2003 President Bush made his (in)famous landing on the carrier in the S-3 Viking (he wanted to fly in an F/A-18 but the Secret Service refused to allow it)

Two out of three of those make a certain amount of sense. The other one is a vanity piece that serves no purpose except to glorify someone's ego.

And many, many American veterans are homeless, suffering from PTSD, alcoholism, and drug abuse, but hey. The Show Must Go On.

I misjudged you. I was certain you were referring to Bush trip to the carrier as the vanity piece. Note though, President Reagan did not order or request the military display.

Dubya gives the impression of being as dumb as a bag of hammers. I'm skeptical whether he thought of being filmed in front of the "Mission Accomplished" banner. Likely on the flight over he said to one of his aides "Hey, I've always wanted to try on one of those flight suits. I bet it would be cool!" and his handlers indulged him. The banner, incidentally, was not for him, but for the completion of a particular phase of the Iraq war. Someone decided having him speak with that in the background would also be "cool." Several people have taken credit for, and apologized for that.

Carter's request for a display of USN maneuvers was (A) not a parade, (B) an attempt to be brought up to speed on advances that had been made since his service.

I find no evidence that there was a parade for Reagan. Maybe you have a source?

Sorry. I just remember seeing it on NBC Nightly News in fall of 1988 (IIRC). I'm honestly not certain it was a parade. I just remember it as a "demonstration" of military hardware, Secretary of Defense Frank Carlucci was behind it, and it was said to be in gratitude for the presidents support of the military.

If I'm mistaken I apologize. At any rate I see nothing wrong with President Trump having his parade. Garamet. The cost of it in context to the defense budget or even to the VA budget is miniscule.

Instead of apologizing, learn. If there was a demonstration of military hardware for Reagan, it would be archived somewhere.

In any case, you might not find anything wrong with Der Drumpfenfuhrer's fantasy, but ask some active-duty personnel how they feel about having to feed their families with SNAP. Ask some veterans how they feel about the corruption in some regions of the VA that denies them essential services. Then talk to some homeless vets and ask them how they feel about sleeping on the streets while Il Douche struts and preens and demands your tax dollars be shunted away from these services to feed his ego.
