You don’t like City On The Edge Of Forever? I personally think that one is way better than Assignment Earth, which felt like an attempt to launch a spinoff rather than an actual episode.

Also, you don’t like Space Seed? Amok Time? Mirror Mirror? Those are generally considered to be some of the most popular episodes.

Corrected. Space Seed and Mirror, Mirror added. City On The Edge of Forever and Amok Time are vastly overrated.

I've heard the story from several elderly Spirk shippers who were there for the first run and grew the fandom that Amok Time was actually written by a gay man specifically for female fanservice. :ramen:

I gotta press F to pay mad respects to that. :techman:

Coincidentally those are two of the very few (maybe six?) Trek novels that I've read.

I've always preferred ST and SW on a screen, not in a book.

I'm the opposite. I guess because the special effects that I can imagine always outclass those I see on screen.

Incidentally those two novels by Diane Carey could never be published today because of their massive focus on a writer created character (Piper) and her cohorts.

"canon" is whatever the producers decide it is. normally to maximize the ratings of their product. If the powers to be decided that every novel and comic book ever written about Star Trek was "canon" it would be.

And "fan fiction"? IIRC all the novels are written by professionals.

"canon" is specifically events that have occurred or been referred to on screen and sanctioned tie-in media.
Nothing more or less, and certainly not at the producers' discretion.

The only exception I’d say is TAS. I’ve heard Roddenberry say TAS is not cannon, but I consider it the end of the five year mission.

The reaction to TATV was so poor that the follow up book "The Good That Men Do" were in fact sanctioned by Paramount to be canon so they could bait all those angry Trip Tucker fangirls back into their good graces

But for the most part, the books... Eh.

    Novels generally aren't canon.

    Fail

(except for that one Garamet wrote [before it got fucked with])
