GEN- Alex from "A Clockwork Orange" is blowing up stars to gain access to a dimension that does exactly what a holodeck does.
Why not just use a holodeck?
Cuz we need to justify bringing Kirk back, shut up.
FC- The Borg try to erase Starfleet by killing Cochrane. Because this plan worked so well for Skynet.
INS- Picard and crew fight against imperialism after gleefully defending imperialism against the Maquis.
Nowhere is there a scene where they find and apologize to Ro.
NEM- Tom Hardy tries to be Nero before Nero. The time wasn't right.

Or just fly a shuttle close to the dimension and let it suck you in like it did Kirk?

Honestly, "exploration" is Star Trek's franchise wide mcguffin, just like "travel around for fun" is for Doctor Who.

No guarantee the shuttle or ship would survive long enough to get you in. A planet barely lasts long enough for you to transition over. :async:

It worked for Kirk, didn't it? And if you're dead, well, you're dead and you don't give a shit. Get back in and you're going to be fighting the version of yourself that remained behind.

But seemingly not for any of the El-Aurians who were still on those ships that exploded before the Enterprise B could beam them out. :(

It's been a while since I saw that episode of DS9, but there was some context to it that led me to believe T. Riker & Lt. Ro were killed by the Cardassians... offscreen. This episode makes no mention of his fate, but only references him, so there was no inconsistency at all.

I started to read this article while rolling my eyes, but the author makes a great point. The spirit of exploration is exactly what's missing from modern Trek altogether. While it's not the entirety of TNG era Trek, it's what should drive the action and conflicts. I do miss it and that's exactly why I really like Lower Decks so far. It FEELS like Star Trek.

I don’t remember that episode. I remember T.Riker’s appearance on DS9 and him surrendering and being imprisoned on Cardassia. But, an episode that later suggested they killed him and Laren?

No, there was nothing that said Ro died - the novels certainly felt free to use her as DS9's security chief in the revival novels, something they wouldn't have done if her fate was unambiguous.

Thomas likewise - STO had his son (now fighting a Cardassian Supremacist Movement called the True Way that hated the peace with the Federation), claiming the Cardassians eventually gave up on maintaining the prison colony he was sent to and the prisoners were left to fend for themselves. Riker fathered a kid with a fellow prisoner, who later died of infection and Riker went soon after from a broken heart.

Again, whilst STO's basis for some stories can be a bit wild, they haven't yet used a character that was confirmed killed by the shows, except via time travel or sci-fi resurrection doohickeys (they have Burnham brought back as an Excalbian simulacrum, Stamets as a holodeck recreation that later gets fused with a copy of Stamets' essence held in the mycelial realm so becoming truly sentient, and L'rell being cloned the same way Kah'less was).

Plus the Excalbian. He's still alive in STO, and still fucking with Starfleet crews (he's the one who brings Burnham back).

Might be a different dead Excalbian. Don't wanna sound racist and say they all look alike.

Boimler's clone seems more confident.... evil transporter duplicate? One of the clips from the teasers has:

Sisko's old friend Cal Hudson was killed by the Jem'hadar according to Eddington, but the fates of other notable Maquis like Tom Riker and Ro were never directly mentioned onscreen.

Oh yeah, if you go on Etsy or Redbubble for 30 seconds you can find pretty much everything you've ever enjoyed made into an overpriced art piece. It's fun yet cynical.

I fully admit to buying one of these, though.

Every series has used the phrase, but VOY and ENT abused the shit out of it.

I did not expect that way of getting Boimler back onto the Cerritos. Although it was a little weird that their characters were starting to diverge already ... I had always figured the differences between Will and Tom in "Second Chances" were more about how their experiences shaped them.

Although it was one of the weaker TNG episodes, the callback to "The Most Toys" was fun.

The Pakleds are a good choice for a recurring villain for this series, given their absurdity.

If they're intending for whatshisface to become a regular in any way, they're gonna have to make him more interesting.

Titan Boimler had his personality defining moment of heroism/overcoming fear when the transport left him on the surface and he had to singlehandedly fight his way to a ship to escape. Cerritos Boimler got out the relatively easy way. :async:

I thought the Boimler who stayed on the Titan was the one who get beamed up and the one who came back to the Cerritos is the one who escaped.

I love that Riker's missions seem to be mostly focused on fighting Pakleds. And giving it some more thought, it kinda makes sense that because of the power vacuum left by the Dominion War (Romulus was decimated especially after its entire Senate was killed in Nemesis, the Klingons were at war even before the Dominion War, Cardassia is basically ruined for a few generations, the Breen are (???), the Ferengi became more progressive) that some other species would come to the forefront. So leave it to the Pakleds to swoop in with stolen technology to become the new baddies.

Also, Ro and Thomas Riker's fates are never directly mentioned on screen. But because of statements in DS9 and Voyager that the Maquis were pretty much wiped out by the Cardassians and Dominion, there is a good chance they are dead, unless they were already in a Federation prison or deep in hiding. There is practically zero chance that Thomas Riker survived a Cardassian prison.
