So this week's episode is Gals Being Pals™ and addressing the one niggling criticism about not breaking up their fave duos. It was done to great effect between Tendi's backstory, confirmation that not all Orions can emmit pheromones and actually building friendship between two chicks. I dig it.

I sure hope the crack about Mariner hanging w Boimler isn't foreshadowing because no :brood:

Also yay for Pan!Mariner. Now let her actually oogle buff women and non binary humans. :techman:

I'm surprised they brought Shax back. I think his death was pretty impactful and while the story itself was funny, I get why people are mixed on that.

The Paris cameo was pretty fun. Poor Boimler can't catch a break

Fun fact, this is also the 800th episode of Star Trek to air! :techman:

    also:

[after Kirk wins a fight against an alien twice his size]

Martia : They'll respect you now.

Captain James T. Kirk : That's a comfort. I was lucky that thing had knees.

Martia : That was not his knee.

Martia : Not everyone keeps their genitals in the same place, Captain.

Yeah, but the Kirk one wasn't intentional, which was my point.

Didn't know about the T'Pol one as I never watched ENT.

Anyhoo, the Paris ep. Great story for Mariner and Tendi. And now we have to view that DS9 flashback in S1 in a new light - I'd assumed Mariner was there with the Quito but now it's possible this scene was set during her DS9 posting and the Quito just happened to be docked and her friends were visiting. Or this was the Quito picking her up for her new posting... which would make her first day pretty tragic...

Not sure if they wanted to sink the Mariner/Boimler and Tendi/Rutherford ships or tease them further with the very rapid denials?

Shax' return was brilliantly done. Though "The Black Mountain" does sound like it was riffing a bit on "The Deep Stone Crypt" from Destiny (those reborn as Exos often dream that they have to battle an army of everyone they know in order to reach it).

And the cat in a box joke was pure genius.

Plus a callback to TNG's "The Hunted"!

For context, T'Pol had been taken hostage and was being sold at an Orion slave auction.

Oh, so they'll kill humans on sight, but only enslave Vulcans?!

Mariner needs to start taking a knee. Or kicking some dudes IN the knee. Or kneeing some dudes in the balls.

The knees of the one outweigh the needs of the many, is what I'm getting at.

To be fair, it was only this particular Lower Decks group of Orions that hate humans enough to want to kill them on sight. Other Orions are (presumably) equal-opportunity slavers.

Also, there would presumably be a bigger market for T'Pol or an average Vulcan than there would be an average human. There was a whole holo-thing about Vulcan Slave Girl, right?

Vulcan Love Slave, which was apparently written by one of the Ferengi that met T'Pol while robbing the NX Enterprise. :async:

And funded by the Tellarite who won the auction for T'pol. It was a joint venture. They were drowning their sorrows in Romulan ale. The Tellarite was lamenting how he won the auction, the Ferengi was talking about how she got away. And then they realized they were both talking about T'pol and came up with Vulcan Love Slave.

I always took it more as the generic stick figure families on minivans, as that was one of the earlier comparisons to TNG shuttles.

    seems at odds...
why couldn't (or for that matter, wouldn't) she eventually be into Boimler as he and the friendship mature? Wouldn't an accomplished, yet relative milquetoast still fulfill her apparent need to conquer once she grows tired of "Type As" and still be consistent?

Oh, I trust the writers would do better by them than other Trek shows have done with romance (nearly 18 years later and I'm still mad I skipped Brian Setzer's guest judge appearance on American Idol to watch "Harbinger" live :brood: THANKS BERMAN) but I also think media has very few m/f friendships that get to just STAY friends. The writing seems way more skewed towards Tendiford being explored first anyway.

Yeah, that's something I truly appreciated about 30 Rock and now Mythic Quest, two coworkers becoming friends without romantic weirdness. "Anyone of the opposite sex you interact with more than once must be a love interest" is a toxic, vaguely rape culturey trope.
It'd be a nice change of pace for the Asian character to have the most successful love life for a change.

Hey, while we're on hookups in Trek, am I deep on the autism spectrum, or was there zero chemistry between Jurati and Rios, or Soji and Narek, before they were just suddenly on each other like rabbits?

Jurati was in a bad place and wanted a distraction, Rios was lonely and wouldn't have turned down a McChicken.

Soji was literally born yesterday and also lonely, and Narek was a weirdo with a completely understandable android fetish. (I saw a porn meme once that said "fetishize your anxiety" and it hit me that that's such a common phenomenon that I can't believe I'd never seen it expressed so plainly before.)

Related: I bet a lot of people in-universe have Borg fetishes, since they're probably not aware of how the Borg must smell. :async:

To hear Mariner tell it, she is basically into bad _______. Boimler can hardly be any further from baing described as bad. So I am hopeful that they do not end up having Mariner and Boimler be a thing. Trek just hasn't done relationships well. When Paris/Torres is probably the best you've got to show for romantic relationships across 800 episodes and like 13 movies, that's not a record one should be proud of.

Maybe I'm just getting a bit tired (or jaded) with how much Trek is available these days, but I'm actually finding this season of Lower Decks to be somewhat underwhelming. And I say this as someone who quite enjoyed the first season.

The playbook for this series seems to be:

Fan service, fan service, joke, fan service, joke, short cameo by Trek actor, fan service, joke.

Look at my recent posts regarding other television series and films. I have plenty of joy.

In particular, I'm loving the MCU at the moment. Also had a lot of love for Free Guy.

But I also call out overrated crap when I see it (Frank Herbert's Dune, for example.)

These are just my opinion, and opinions are like Federal Far... I mean, assholes.

To be fair, that was largely true of S1 except the cameos weren't as ubiquitous. S1 had Frakes/Sirtis/De Lancie playing their TNG roles and J.G. Hertzler and perhaps some other Trek actors that I am not remembering playing new characters.

The main difference between S1 and S2 is how quick and heavily they mashed the reset button.

At the end of S1, it seemed like they were going to shake things up quite a bit: Boimler was going to be on the Titan. The crew was going to have to deal with it being out that Mariner is Freeman's daughter. Mariner was going to deal with some of her issues instead of being a snarky slacker. And she was going to actually go and work with her mom, rather than undermine her. Shaxs was dead and there was emotional heft to that death to process, plus a replacement to break in. Rutherford had nearly died and had a new implant.

After episode 3, basically all of these changes have now been undone, and the characters have basically regressed to their forms at the beginning of S1.

I still am enjoying S2, but it hasn't built on the string of strong episodes in the latter half of S1 in terms of comedy or plot.

I was underwhelmed by the first half is SO and then it really grew a beard in the last half, so I'm willing to give wait till the end of the season to pass judgement.

That aside, bringing Shax back for a gag was just....I think it could've worked more if they didn't go so far with his death to begin with. It was funny but I don't blame ppl for being nonplussed over it.

Forgot to comment on this but wow that's....a very depressing track record indeed.

I didn't hate Kira and Odo, but that's a very minority opinion, it seems. At least they didn't have bone-breaking sex or used neuropressure as a plot point to shove 'em into bed. Plus, Odo can shapeshift into any kind of phallic shape, and what woman wouldn't want that? :soma:

My teen bitterness aside, Tripol (??) had potential that season 4 squash like a bug. Watching their scenes reminds me of watching current Bold and the Beautiful episodes where characters have the same circular conversation for weeks (or even months! :brood: ) on end and no one does a damn thing to secure their happiness. Boring.

But not as boring as the cocktease that was whatever that was with Picard and Crusher :borg:

The only good ship in Trek is Spock/Kirk and I hope someone has the balls to make them canon in a future reboot within my lifetime
