    Will not be built in our lifetimes, that's for sure.
    I read this, and I couldn't help but wonder if civilizations firing up one of these wasn't the source of the mysterious Fast Radio Bursts which have been in the news lately. I also wondered if that when a civilization fired one of those puppies up if it didn't "flip" them to another dimension/universe (which would explain why they don't seem to be repeated).

    I remember an Arthur Clarke story--3001, the final sequel to 2001--where someone recounts that astronomers in the future had witnessed a star explode, but they chillingly noted that one of the planets in that star system exploded first.
