you might want to let CNN know about him being a pile of shit - they are strangely silent about it. I can't believe they would just sit on a story or bury it.

That would be nice, but it's in order of presentation in the thread.

As someone who mostly enjoys Grease, I'd have to say it was dated by opening night of it's first Broadway performance, which was an even bigger mess narratively than the film.

I dunno that Grease was the worst example of slut shaming, seeing that the narrative gave Rizzo an entire number to sing about exactly that type of hypocrisy. There's not much one can handwaved about Danny trying to grope Sandy at the drive in or lines like "did she put up a fight," however.

That, and if McQueen didn't take the role, they would've probably cast the role using a white girl in blackface. I have my problems with that movie well outside of the black dialogue, but at the time of production the casting of black actors was considered revolutionary. That it's hard to hear 80 years out is a good thing; it means we've advanced.

Nor does attacking the actors for taking a role fix the actual problem of the script getting changed. Even to this day one can push back on insensitivity--and some are actually listening--but not everyone wins against the studio. I was FB friends with a high ranking person who worked on the Star Wars films and Abrams not only lost most of the vision he had for the trilogy after Rian Johnson lifted his leg over the plan, Disney reneged on the edit they accepted for Ep IX that he didn't find out about until the premiere.

And this is a big time white cis, straight director who got hosed in the late 2010s. A black actress in the 30s would have found herself cancelled fasted than you can say "Gina Carano" for trying to correct that or bring any nuance.

All that being said, I found a free copy of the book and tried to read it, but I didn't even get to Scarlett's introduction because the slave dialogue and accents were damn near unreadable. I'll grit my teeth over the ideals of the era, but if I need to run pages of dialogue through a decoder to understand it I'm noping the fuck outta there. Mark Twain didn't do this in Huckleberry Finn and that was written in the 1880s.

You think this is maddening, some 13 year old pale kid on Tumblr accused the Freddie Murcery biopic of burying gays for killing Freddie at the end of the film. :tactfulsilence:

Remember TI, the rapper that forced his daughter to submit to medical "virginity checks" because he was so against premarital relations and sexual immorality?

My granmdfather tells a story about how when he met my grandmother over in Germany while he was running telephone lines during the Korean war for the US military, he was at a dance where the local girls were brought to entertain the GIs and dance with them. According to him and my grandmother he told the squad no one was allowed to dance with her but him when he saw her. This was considered romantic by her, and I never heard her complain about that or him. However, looking at that I would be all about how dare he stop me from meeting other guys because he was some terrorizing bully of his platoon. There are the thoughts of how much physical abuse my grandmother took over the years, and the fact my grandfather let his own daughter be molested by his father because men let that shit happen in family.

I love my grandmother on that side and despite her failings taught to her by society she did teach me to love and be charitable and have fun. I do not know what she did to wrap her mind around all of that because she was not ever in a position to be strong and not face disasterous consequences. One of the reasons I could not take care of my grandfather in his present state is I have a real good idea of the man he actually was behind the make up. The make up has failed over the years and too much has been told. I know he was a proud fighter in his youth, but when I hear how he fought he was the worst of the worst of bullies and drunken tough guys. Knowing the type of person he is through a historical lense I have to wonder if those final falls my grandmother had were his doing.

The truth is not always pretty, but we cannot be so disgusted with the past that we need to change without looking at history's grotesque nature without any make up or sheilding when we are old enough to understanbd.

The above tweet may not be entirely correct, at least as far as New York state is concerned. Tom Reed, a "moderate" (whatever that means these days) up and coming Republican with a bright future is now a has-been who's future is now in the past...
