    This.

It's a niche scenario and a narrow one at that but it's not out of the question and the fact we can devise plausible series of events that could lead there is telling.

The mindset that this is a normal presidency where all of the normal assumptions and certainties can be relied upon is complacent.

I do wonder at times whether people actually understand the terms they are using outside of the slogans. I don't mean to denigrate your farmer friend but he should realise that a dose of socialism is exactly what is needed, what in fact he's already reliant upon.

These would be the same people who bitch about "freeloaders" (i.e., anyone other than them who's on public assistance) while they sit in their houses in the middile of their fallow fields watching reruns of Cops. The disconnect would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

I think we would probably be more under threat of a radical militia seizing land and harassing the people on it. We had that just a couple years back with the people following the Bundy rancheros and trying to take government land and putting up armed roadblocks in a small town. I will accept the outcome was mostly annoyance for the town and workers, and given the death toll was one guy who did a suicide by cop while the rest surrendered to police, I would say the proper choice was made. If you watched some of their rants while holding the place they had themselves worked up and were threatening a war.

I would have tried to make an example and storm in and try to limit deaths, but it would have been a bloody mess. Instead the Feds commanded by Obama said let them tire themselves out and be prepared if they start killing. I would have thought that treatment would have encouraged others to try something, but it did not and the US government has plenty of spare office space to do it's business.

The US government can let trump have his hissy fit when his presidency is over and give authority to the new president. They let him tire himself out and then arrest and prosecute him for any crimes he may commit trying to hold onto the office. We are that strong and capable we can wait for him to tire out like a parent of a screaming baby who is just having a meltdown. If any of the radicals who worship him want to join him in attempting to hold on, we just let them break the law until we either need to stop them from shooting, or they surrender to the police after piling up the criminal charges and ruining their lives for trump.

I should say our law enforcement should handle black people like they handled the bundy rancheros. Shooting someone within a few second without even giving them a chance to surrender is poor police work for our nation. It is one thing if they are presently shooting up the neighborhood, but if not secure the area and get a surrender even if it may be really hard to do.

You're probably more under threat from lots of things, such questions aren't zero sum, but the idea of a militia seizing land is one which only works on a small scale sans some kind of coordination. That, in turn, requires a common purpose, eg supporting someone or something.

Good point. Since most militias consider themselves libertarian, and there are as many definitions of libertarianism as there are "libertarians," they're not likely to coordinate on anything more complicated than which flavor of beef jerky they should pick up when they restock, much less whose turn it is to go buy the beef jerky.

Another way I think Trump is a joke is with this China trade deal. The media has been complicit in this joke because they act like China will bend to our will.

In case nobody has been paying attention, China still has the ability to exert tremendous control over its population, usually with the threat of jail or with the barrel of a gun. China can hunker down in a trade war for a very long time. In the US, companies start losing money and they immediatedly whine to the politicians for assistance. Trump won't be able to withstand a drawn out trade war because he would lose the Midwest.

And the legitimacy of the Chinese government is based in large part on their ability to deliver a steadily rising standard of living to the majority of their citizens. Especially those in the cities on the coastal areas. No matter what you think, a few points of unemployment won't have Americans marching in the streets threatening to lynch government officials. You can't say that in China.

What they will do is march in the streets in protest and support a populist alternative, often in quite vociferous terms which frequently result in violence.

We didn't have significant violence in the streets during the so called "Great Recession". A few points more than now won't make much difference.

The Proud Boys seem to disagree. Pretty sure they support Trump whose platform was unemployment? How's Sacramento looking these days? All settled down? Did you know white supremacism tends to be correlated with economic downturns, or the perception thereof?

Really? I guess there was no other way to explain that (very) failed experiment. Still, "just a dream" sounds like a cop out to be honest.

Yes it is utterly out of the question. And saying that it could happen in the U.S. because it has happened in hapless countries across Africa and Asia doesn't mean anything.

Fans were not happy with that direction, and the dream was generally well accepted overall. There was no real need for seven.

    Define "hapless".

The US looks pretty hapless from where I'm sat right now, so does the UK, maybe we have different standards.

He'll see it as "See, they love me! They really love me! I gotta go there more often."

Which, indeed, would be a very good thing for the country because he'd be too busy to invent more government shutdowns or invade Iran.
