among other things that the shutdown is affecting...
housing inspections for HUD which are required for all rental properties at least yearly
likewise infrastructure spending under HUD for needed repairs (hope your furnace doesn't go out, yo!)
IRS W-2 and other tax document processing necessary to facilitate home closings (so good for the housing market)
Payments to federal contractors who in turn won't be able to pay their workers which adds another big slug of out-of-work people to that figure referring to direct government employees.

Fact is, the White House hasn't yet figured out all the derivative negative impacts that will accumulate as time goes on...

    BUT
Strangely* the National Park Service somehow has money to keep the clock tower tourist attracting in the Old DC post office (i.e. Trump Hotel) open.

    *it's not strange.

I am thinking a little creativity might be effective. Someone should make a five billion dollar bill with trump's face on it and give it to him to buy his wall. This way he can hold onto it and pretend he has five billion dollars and we all get to move on. He was going to pocket the money anyway. We can occasionally send him some pictures of some walls with some Mexicans around them and I am pretty sure he will fall for it.

What I don't completely understand is what Mitch McConnell has to gain from allowing the shutdown to continue. The old Senate passed a clean CR 100-0. The new House has passed the same clean CR, but McConnell won't let it come up for a vote in the new Senate. They've certainly got the votes to override a veto in the Senate, and at this point I'd be surprised if Pelosi can't wrangle 55 Republican votes in the House to do the same, starting with any districts on the southern border which don't want a wall.

So what's McConnell getting out of this? He can't be doing Trump a favor like this for cheap.

McConnel will be reelected until he dies. Not convincing.

Who said anything about him fearing re-election? He's just doing what Trump wants because the alternative is the next two years being a big(ger) pain in the butt.

given his choices in 2016, I'll wager there's some kompromat out there in someone's files.

The Russians have footage of him killing his siblings in the nest when he was just a hatchling. Really gruesome stuff, he used plastic six-pack rings on a lot of them.

Mitch would win against any dem, but if he sides with the dems he would be primaried. Trump and his fascist supporters would never forget if he let the vote come up, and then had a veto override. It is possible there are enough weaker reps to override the veto, and that possibility increases every day of the shut down. This is also their last chance to get the money. Also, if they win here it will probably make it much easier come the next opportunity to shut down the government.

The dems may be strong now, but when the people losing starts effecting the economy the big corporations are going to lay into the corporate dems and tell them to get things like SNAP and tax refunds out. Those things typically go into corporate pockets because the people have to spend them. It is just a matter of time before the hungry people just want the dems to give in and give trumpo his 5 billion so they can pay their rent and eat. I would also figure SNAp is not the only thing on the line here. TANF is probably going to get held up, along with payments for electricity and heat which are also a part of welfare. If social security avoids a hit while welfare gets hit you probably hit dem voters worse than republicans.

So, Trump wants the borders secure, but one of the affected agencies is the Coast Guard - good times for smuggling boatloads of coke, guys!

Oh, and the Coast Guard were offering some helpful tips to furloughed workers and those deemed essential but working without pay - they had to take it down after they realized the optics though:

yep! The optics makes it seem like the Coast Guard isn't taking care of it's people, and it could affect recruiting and morale. Sorry, the truth hurts!

BTW I am already a "mystery shopper" in that it's anybody's guess if I will have enough to pay for my purchase when I check out!

Wow, that document literally advocates using the welfare of millions of poor people as collateral to blackmail the Mexican government.

Well, if he had all that leverage, why hasn't he done it? Has the rule blocking wire transfers out of the US without proof of legitimate status been brought up in the Congress or Senate?

One might almost suspect it was bullshit.

we have a Starfleet engineer corps? It would make sense given we will have a Space Force soon! BTW I will admit though the army engineers (okay they could have been air force I don't remember) filled in several giant bomb craters in the runway at Al-Asad pretty damn fast! :salute: You know since the air force bombed the runway (so the enemy couldn't use it) it would make sense if the air force fixed the runway once we secured it so that they could now use it.

Wasn't this the exact plot of House of Cards, Season 3? Underwood tried to misappropriate FEMA emergency funds to his "America Works" program.
