    https://www-m.cnn.com/2019/04/16/americas/fake-delivery-man-crossbow/index.html?r=https://www.cnn.com/

Dressing up as a delivery man? Check.
Giant crossbow hidden in a cardboard box? Check.
Secret hole in box so man can fire crossbow at victim? Check.

As if that wasn't bizarre enough the victim lives after being shot at close range by (what I presume is a hand) crossbow. I mean why did he go to all this effort yet fail to make sure his victim was actually dead? Also he seemed to not know there were home security cameras which filmed the whole thing.

    Talk about a weird case.

the article doesn't explain exactly what damage the bolt (that's what crossbow projectiles are called) did to her body, other than the injuries are "life altering".

What's the point of living in the modern world if your only means of murder is medieval?

I dunno... our murder rate was considered to have spiked last year when we hit a total of 96 or 3.3/100 000 (close to NYC, but nowhere near the 20-67/100 000 rates of many US cities).

Maybe it isn't the means of murder, but the culture it occurs in that's stuck in an anachronistic time?

2.5 per 100,000 in 2018 up slightly from 2.2 per 100,000 in 2017. We are safer than Canada. :)

    2017, Toronto was only 2.1/100000.

How are the gun laws in California?

Sadly, a lot looser yet still almost the same result in 2017 and better than you in 2018.

So the lowest murder rate in US cities is, on average, about the same as the highest rate for a Canadian one (over 500K)...

What the fuck is it with incompetent murderers around your parts? Is it the drugs they're all on?

EDIT. Please read as HUMOUR and not PASSIVE AGGRESSION, we seem to have a disconnect there at times ;)

Here we go again! More crossbow craziness! BTW I love this "no shit Sherlock!" statement:
'This is a highly unusual incident for this area" says detective leading investigation. :chris:
For this area? Where the fuck in 2019 is this not an unusual incident?

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...f-holyhead-wales-satellite-dish-a8878296.html

BTW if you want to see the effectiveness of a modern high-octane crossbow used by competent shooters on medium/large critters youtube search SMOKING DEER WITH CROSSBOW
to get a basic idea. Yowza it's like the finger of death reaching out to touch them. :bergman: if you are shot with a 400 feet-per-second crossbow firing a hunting broad-head by anybody with a basic understanding of human physiology you will not survive - no way, no how, not even a chance in hell. Maybe these people were shot with target points not broad heads.

Disclaimer, this post has nothing to do with my gun politics, merely having some knowledge of bows and their effectiveness.

Yup, crossbows are fucking deadly, as are well used long or short bows in more confined spaces. Arguably they can still hold their own against small guns in well trained hands. Thankfully the criminal fraternity don't seem to be too eager to pick up on this fact.

If anyone thought the portrayal of archery in this movie was ridiculous:

    think again:

None of that was CGI, Taron Egerton literally can shoot that fast and accurately and he's got nothing on the guy they got in to train him.

People imagine the legend of shooting through your own arrow when it's stuck in a target is pure fantasy. Actually that's childs' play, the real skill is to be able to split someone elses' arrow as it flies towards you, or even better catch it and fire it back:
