While Congressman Cortez brought a lot of attention to the 12 year time span I've heard it repeated from various other climate change "alarmists" (as I call them).

What is the basis of the idea that unless something is done to mitigate global climate change that the world faces catastrophe in only a decade plus change? Note, while I'll admit that I'm not much a believer in global climate change caused by manmade sources but I am interested in a serious explanation regarding the science involved that these people are referring to in order to get the 12 year time frame.

Note, I put it here instead of the tech forum because I figured any climate change discussion might quickly devolve into angry exchanges.

Act now! Supplies are running out! This is a limited-time offer!

And isn't amazing, that it's synced to Presidential election cycles! It's almost like this is about political power. Naaaaah...

Now that we've heard from the critics and deniers (of which I am one of course) can some of the believers and advocates chime in and explain this stuff please?

    I really want to know.

If you are sincere, you could do worse than starting to read here:

However, since you have already stated that you are "not much of a believer" in science, I can see where this is likely going, and I am not here for that farce.

A guest on Tucker Carlson's FoxNews show said tonight that the 12 year thing came from the Paris Accord on Climate Change that claimed that "the world had until 2030 to make major changes in carbon emissions". From 2018 to 2030 is of course 12 years and this thing metamorphized into the "we have to do something in 12 years or we're all doomed" which of course no major climate scientists have ever claimed.

Man-made global climate change is science. You don't get to deny it just because it is politically inconvenient. You don't get to turn it into a matter of belief. If you believe in an objective reality discoverable by science, this is it. If you don't, it is utterly disingenuous to ask about one detail of said science.

I posted this just before the show came on. I don't care for Tucker Carlson that much but its sometimes informative.

I'm curious how you come to your conclusion that human influenced climate change is a laughable concept, given that the argument for that is usually people talking about natural cycles over hundreds of thousands of years.

There is strong evidence that we've had higher temperatures than we are projected to face in the next century less than ONE thousand years ago.

No there isn't; but even if there were, that would in no way contradict anthropogenic climate change. And it certainly won't contradict the fact that it's a matter of science and not a matter of personal belief.

Just to drop some actual science into this moronic circlejerk. It's actually too late to do much. We should devote our attention to preparing to deal with the worst effects and protect our coastal cities from flooding, storm surges and dealing with loss of fresh water. The US will probably be mostly okay, some areas are probably fucked though like the southeast and west coast. Most industrial countries should be okay for the most part depending on location. Things will just suck a lot more than now and some spots will likely be completely flooded or uninhabitable. We're a clever species and we're adaptable, we'll manage.

Unless all the frozen methane at the bottom of the ocean thaws, then we're utterly fucked. The last time that happened roughly 90% of all land based life went extinct. Hopefully that won't happen though. Because I've read about it and holy fucking shit.

I do find it funny that politicians and morons are trying to act like climate change isn't a thing, but every single company on the planet is going out of their way to prepare for it, even the oil industry. They raised their off-shore oil platform about ten feet. I also listen to a Disney park podcast, they're quietly preparing their US parks to deal with it.

No, we really need to do both. Because even if we fail to prevent a 2 degree increase, the difference between that and a four or six degree increase remains enormous.

It's honestly weird how much I miss about different wacky theories for extinction events since I'm not super interested in why things go extinct: https://www.scientificamerican.com/...crobe-blamed-in-earths-worst-mass-extinction/
