They're at risk of joining the passenger pigeon and the dodo.
I'm tempted to suggest that we introduce koalas into California since lots of people have planted eucalyptus trees there, but given that California has the tendency to burst into flames as well, this might not help save them.

Koalas are threatened and should be considered for additional protections, but they're nowhere near extinct, "functionally" or otherwise. Unless recent brushfires burned down the entirety of eastern Australia, their habitat should be largely intact.

I heard that news earlier yesterday, then saw some videos and news clips about it online. Was really hard to watch, and really upsetting.

One of my neighbor's house caught on fire a few days ago. I'm not sure if it was overnight, earlier in the morning, or during the day. I hope they were home, if not then they're little dog may have died in the fire.

So yeah, knowing there were several hundred that did die in the fires is really hard and upsetting to think about.

Koalas as a species aren't going extinct any time soon, but functional extinction refers to species roles in an ecosystem with functional extinction being that they no longer play their role in any meaningful way.

That said, as you said this was misreported and there are still a lot of habitats intact.

Pandas are off the endangered species list. Canadian geese will still be endangered cause low numbers cause lack of genetic diversity. Quantum computers would help with gene splicing endangered species helping witt genetic diversity.
