It's a TV show thus everything is taken to comic/dramatic extremes. But I would imagine when you were "on duty" you couldn't drink but off duty you could. Obviously there shouldn't be too many people off duty drinking to excess so when the shit hits the fan suddenly the unit isn't overwhelmed.

I do know when I was in Korea (drinking duh) more than a few times I had to get recalled to work when critical equipment went down, so I had to work "impaired" but since I'm not actually controlling air traffic this was not a big deal at the time.

I love MASH. The cast worked, especially the latter seasons cast with Morgan, Farrell, and Stiers. The allegory used to show the absurdity of the Vietnam war (and most war in general) was nicely done. The writing was almost always on point. Yeah, it could get heavy handed quite often, especially with Hawkeye, but then Hawkeye was written well enough that it just seemed in character for him to stand on his soap box. B.J. was a lot more nuanced about it, as a family man who tried to balance the stupidity of war, the need to save human lives, and his desire to return home to his new family.

The show also never failed to stand up for people who would have been marginalized back then, too. I remember the episode about the gay soldier, where Burns and Houlihan wanted to turn him in while Hawkeye and Trapper worked to protect him because they felt it was no one else's business. For the 1970s, and on network television, that was downright forward thinking. Quite frankly, the lessons they show taught could be applied to today. We all know at least one Frank Burns, after all.

I'm not sure they could capture that lightning in a bottle again, nor do I think they should try.

Edit: (I forgot that it was Hawkeye and Trapper in the episode about the gay soldier. It has been corrected)

Aren't there times when you see Hawkeye drinking in the Swamp and then the chopper call comes over the PA? Considering how often they're shown drinking and how often Radar comes over the loudspeaker to announce incoming wounded, avoiding ever showing them in juxtaposition would have taken a conscious effort.

Plus, you know, it's a teevee show. The needs of the plot and all that...

I'm more bothered by the technical things they got wrong, but not enough that it lessens my enjoyment of the show.

yes I remember that! Hawkeye and BJ (maybe Trapper) taught Korean kids to say that.....classic! One of my favorite episodes was when Frank was temporarily in charge and had the unit move the whole camp 100 meters down the road.....because it was a "mobile" hospital. :jayzus:

It wasn't Korean kids they taught how to say "Frank Burns eats worms" and at the end of the episode "You tell'em ferret face". It was Korean adult men who were being trained to help out in the unit. Colonel Potter's idea.

And the episode was "The Novacaine Mutiny" were Pierce was being courtmartialed that they referred to Frank ordering the unit to move. And it was "across the road", not "100 meters down the road".
