This is a story that’s been circulating for the past few weeks and I think we are aware of it. I’ve been debating even bringing it up because of the potential backlash, but it seems unavoidable. My thoughts, I think the women should make their case, which I think they have, mostly. I also think that if you aren’t satisfied with your pay, maybe you should find another team to to play for. Either way, I don’t think there’s a clear answer and I’m kind of on the fence with this. Anyway, here’s an article with a reasonable explanation for the gap. Discuss.

    It's already being discussed.

Are we supposed to have the same arguments in this thread? :brood:

You’re supposed to keep to the subject of each thread and not deviate.:bailey: I’ll let the mods decide though.

Professional athletes have always had to fight and scrape for every dollar, on and off the field. :salute:

Too many fans tend to side with ownership in every labor dispute.

It's almost like the free market is not equipped to deal with this.

Care to explain how a national team player would find another team to play for?

Do these soccer teams work like Olympic teams do? There have been a number of athletes who've competed in those games for countries where they weren't citizens.

Sounds like they hold dual citizenships (technically i could compete for England even though i was born in Canada because i have a British passport by way of my parents being born there) and in the more extreme cases crooked governments expediting citizenships after poaching athletes

Right. But do these soccer teams work the same way?

I had no idea about the Olympic thing until Becky Hammon went to play for Russia.

Yeah i think they do - iirc a guy named Owen Hargreaves who was born in Calgary decided to play for England’s soccer team like 15 years ago because his folks were Brits

Same with that filthy traitor Brett Hull who ended up playing for the USA instead of Canada in hockey

Players who hold dual citizenship before their 18th birthday are allowed a ‘One Time Switch’ at any time but only if they have not played a competitive match for the senior team (youth teams don’t count).

I think there's an awful lot of confusion evident in this thread (and that link) about the nature of international versus club football.

Professional players are first and foremost employees of a club. Each club will structure its' pay internally according to the performance of individual players, the clubs' resources and the usual market forces surrounding recruitment of talent.

That has nothing to do with playing for your country. Players are (with limited exceptions) able to play for only one country, their own. Countries cannot by and large compete financially for the services of players, contracts cannot be bought and sold as with the club game. Therefore applying a market based argument to the pay gap is misleading at best when there is no true market.

Yes, the athletes are very oppressed.

Perfect example. You're jealous that the top athletes in the world get paid millions during the few years they are able to perform at their peak. Yet your sympathies lie with the billionaire team owners who keep raking it in year after year.

But these are not the top athletes in the world. They're the top female athletes playing a sport no one watches. It's a lesser version of the sport and there's no way around that. If women want equal pay, play with the same ball and play the game as well as the men do.

Oh, and I'm not jealous. I have family members in pro and college sports who actually do make millions.

The US Men's National Team has been garbage for awhile now. Call it the post Landon Donovan era. I would be fine with paying the US Women's National Team considerably more than the men's team. The women actually get results.

This discussion has nothing to do with club level football. Bringing that into the discussion just muddies the waters.

They've won the highest international accolade in the worlds' most popular sport.
