How convenient. Just as an investigation that's almost 10 years overdue got started. Dead men tell no tales.
So one terrorist killed another terrorist and was then silenced by someone else? Is that about right?
The "inside" (of Nothern Ireland) perspective: The British government wanted Billy got rid of. He was a thorn in their side. He had been jailed, but they wanted rid of him for good. So they set him up to be murdered. They put everything in place to let the INLA members be able to have information on where he was, how they could get there, and how they could smuggle a gun into the jail, hoping that they would plan and carry out a murder. They did. A gun was smuggled into the prison. Those in charge turned a blind eye. Two INLA men left their own block, cut through a wire fence (where did they get the cutters?), scaled a wall, ran across a roof that was covered by CCTV, but which was mysteriously not being monitored at the time, got down into the Loyalist wing were Wright was in the back of a van about to be taken to a visit, charged to the van, opened the doors and filled Billy Wright up with lead. The gov't wanted him gone. They set up a situation where the INLA could murder him. The INLA, in their own way, were happy to oblige. Whether they (the INLA) knew it was a setup is unclear, however with hindsight it's pretty obvious. Everyone in Northern Ireland knows this. There has been a push for almost 10 years to get a proper full investigation into the events surrounding the murder, government involvement etc. Finally the investigation has just got underway, and suddenly one of the killers has turned up dead! Some coincidences are just too coincidental.
I wonder what Billy Wright would have been up to by now if he hadn't been killed. He was a very dangerous man, probably even more so than the other terrorists we've had.
Well the thing about Billy was that he was clever and intelligent. Most loyalist paramilitaries are as dumb as a box of rocks. Billy on the other hand had that smart streak. During the largest of the drumcree standoffs, they "commandeered" a gigantic earth moving machine from a local quarry, armour-plated it, filled the tyres with foam/gel (can't shoot them out then) and brought it up to challenge the police/army barricade. They also brought the entire province to a standstill. Roadblocks everywhere, people walking out of workplaces, they even commandeered a number of concrete mixer trucks and drove them onto a flyover over the M1, where they emptied their load onto the motorway below for a ready-made concrete barrier. Basically all of Northern Ireland was shut down for a couple of days. And Wright was behind quite a bit of that. Certainly the bulldozer escapade was his doing.
My wife is from there, so we pop by for visits with the family, and so I can shop at marks & spencer and HMV.
