It's the first of the "Four Noble Truths" of Buddhism:

    1. All Life is Suffering.

I dunno about all life...but puberty sure was tough.

Hmm... well, no disrespec' or nuffink, but that philosophy can be taken out of context (as in life is suffering when compared to the joy of what is after, or whatever); or some introspective mumbo-jumbo from someone missing the good stuff of here and now.

    IMHO, of course.

Yeah well, my quote was a HUGE oversimplification of that philosophy.

I think it's more like, as a condition of existence (and because all things are impermanent) so all sentient creatures will undergo suffering. (Pain, loss, sadness, death, etc...)

As opposed to "Life is nothing but misery, then you die.", it's more like "Life has a lot of pain in it...it's just a fact. We live, love, lose and die. Can't avoid it."

My oldest daughter and I went to a reading Tuesday night of passages from banned and challenged books...we both really loved it, but she told be that this was the best part (well, she said it tied with Studs Terkel, and Jodi Picoult..):
