    ...

No one there is wearing a dress. :marathon:

As to the story...why the hell did she ask? She just should have went. Asking was dumb.

She probably wanted to create a controversy.

I'm sure she'll be real popular among her classmates who got knocked out of having a prom.

I assume most American Proms are like the high school formal we had here, where you need to buy tickets in advance. We even had to put down the name and other details (like age) of a partner who was coming along if they didn't attend the school.

Also Mewa, I know this has been said bere, but you would have made a fantastic white bigot back in the 1950's. (or at that school in the 1990's that Elwood mentioned)

What the fuck is a prom anyways but a way to separate parents from their money, good riddance. I never saw the use of them.

Laying aside whether or not the school is obliged to host a prom (it's not) and laying aside whether proms are silly useless rituals...

They HAD planned to have one, as they had in years past, they didn't cancel it because they are silly, or because it cost too much, or because they were not obliged.

They canceled it out of bigotry.

I guarantee you that kids who go to class every fucking day with these two girls are not just now finding out they are a couple. they have already either accepted them, took no notice of them, or been offended by them - in the hallways and classrooms.
Nothing new is going to be added at the prom which will suddenly make these girls MORE offensive.

Frankly, even in Mississippi, EVERY kid has been exposed to the concept of homosexuals and has processed it. sure a lot of them are religious and a lot of them will say "that's so wrong" but even those know they have to share a world with those people and are resigned to their presence.

It would have been a complete non-issue if they had quietly waived the ban and moved on.

Sure, a few preachers would have pounded the pulpit about it on Sunday but otherwise, life would have gone on.

Hopefully some thing is worked out for a priavte prom - and don't be surprised if the girls are welcomed there without hesitation (unless it's hosted by a church but good luck finding a church who'll host a dance in MS)

I wouldn't be so sure about that, because from a couple of other articles I have read which quote this girl it sounds like the school has done a pretty good job of making sure a lot of students blame her for their not being a prom.

Great quote from Roger Ebert who linked to this story on his twitter:

"It's okay if girls go to a prom together because they can't get dates, but god forbid if they like each other."

edit: Thinking more about this, I can almost start to see where those "protect marriage" people are coming from. Canceling the prom to avoid a gay couple attending is a mindset of "if we can't have things done our way, no-one can have it". With that sort of worldview it's easy to see how they could see allowing gay marriage as being destructive to ordinary marriage. It's fucking retarded and doesn't make them any less a bunch of bigots, but I think I understand now at least.

I think it's more of a case that she wanted to make a stink about it. If she had just gone and her g/f had shown up in a tux and they had been a couple, there would have been some titters and pointing and that would have been it.

But it sounds like she wanted to make a federal case of it.

Not at all, she's just a student who wanted to take her girlfriend to prom.

The school has in previous years refused entry/kicked out homosexual couples.

This year to avoid a confrontation at prom she went to the school admin first to check if she would be ok, they then put out a memo saying no homosexual couples allowed.

They couldn't go together anyway because her girlfriend is not in the same year level as her, thus needs to be the official date of a prom attendee to go along. If they had somehow managed to sneak in together, the school has precedent that they would remove them.

At this point the only two options available to her were:

    1) Not attend the prom with her partner.

    2) Challenge the legality of their conditions.

She tried to go about everything in a low key manner, it is the school that has escalated the scale at every step.

She went to them without publicity and asked if they would be ok, they escalated by putting out an official memo that it was not allowed.

She then sought legal advice who gave the school time to change policy before they would follow up, the school chose to escalate the scale by canceling the entire prom and laying the blame on her for it.

I can sort of see Bailey's interpretation, but the way the ACLU got involved so quickly kind of makes me think maybe she was trying to provoke something so she could get them involved. But I don't know.

Were they hot? I'd totally stare creepily at the chick in the tux if she was hot. But seriously, why wouldn't anyone want to see a hot lesbian couple at their prom? That would make it a lot more interesting. ;)

Well if this is about whether or not she can go to her prom then there is a deadline that means she needed to get things sorted out quickly.

I think she went to them to get a definitive answer one way or another to decide it she should get the ACLU involved, yes. However I don't think that was out of a desire to be a troublemaker, rather that if they weren't going to let her attend then she needed to know now and act quickly to try and change that. I am sure that she would have much preferred the school to initially have said that of course homosexual couples would be allowed to attend.

edit: Great quote that points out why even if she was trying to cause a scene (which I don't think is the case) it would be irrelevant anyway:

She is attempting to force the school to host the prom.

This is why I think the school did the right thing. If they had just let her come with her date, that would be fine. But since they obviously weren't willing to do that, the solution is simply not to have a prom. Trying to force the school to have a prom seems entirely wrong to me.

And if the school is forced to let kids "wear what they want" to the prom, the results will be quite amusing, I would be willing to bet. It won't just be a question of one girl showing up in a tuxedo.

I think the girl is making even more trouble for herself by doing this.

BTW, the comment that the prom being cancelled "ruins the senior year" for some students shows the extent of shallowness and stupidity that exists. If your life is so empty that a senior year in high school is worthless without a prom, then you don't have much of a senior year, or much of a life.

At this point it seems like she is trying to get the schools policy officially changed.

While it is true that there is no right of students for their school to hold a prom, it is pretty well established through precedent that canceling/withholding something from everyone because you are prohibited from discriminating against some people is in itself discrimination.

I never attended the prom. My high school years were like "just hurry up, get the diploma and get your ass away from these stupid people and into university."

My sister on the other hand RELISHED high school. She has a whole album of her junior and senior proms. Hmm, I can all but guarantee that the lesbian dressed in a tuxedo would STILL look better than some of those girls in their dresses in my sister's prom album. I think when it comes to young people, lesbians get a nastier slice of shit from their straight female peers than gay men get from their straight male peers. Hell, there EXISTS many gay men who give lesbians a hard time which I don't get at all; I mean, they're women, it's not like we lost one. IDK, my two cents of first hand observation.

Which is probably a good idea in itself. But this, IMO, is not the way to go about it.

I disagree. There are often rules that seem silly, for this very reason. I heard of a school that had a rule against girls wearing beards, for example, because someone used the "discrimination" approach to try to overturn their policy of not allowing the guys to wear beards.

All a "no discrimination" ruling can mean is that you have to treat everyone the same. It cannot and does not mean that you owe them something in particular, if that "something" is not in the contract. Holding proms is a tradition (and a silly one, IMO, but that's beside the point), not an integral part of education. I do not see how you can argue that "knowing how to go to a prom" is part of the education that students need to receive.

Which is EXACTLY the result the more bigoted folks there WANT - for the girl to be "punished" by here peers for daring to be different.

She takes the blame, they look wise.

    I see right through that.

As for the suit - I can see the argument. while on the surface a school being forced to carry out an extra-curricular activity seems like nonsense - forcing the school to reverse a clearly discriminatory action (which it was because there's no way to argue they would have canceled it had she behaved as they expected her to) is not so silly at all.

One wonders if, had some girl shown up in a bikini or some guy shown up drunk, they would have canceled the whole prom on that account?

We know very well they wouldn't have.

Even if she's grandstanding, she has a point. And even if this particular girl could have done it quietly and MAYBE not have gotten ejected (best case scenario) that still doesn't mean the school's actions are proper.

If in fact you have a discriminatory policy, then it's a bad policy regardless of the manner in which you are called on it.

I'm not, as a rule, comfortable with fringey lawsuits, but for the school to essentially pit the majority of students against the "troublemaker" on purpose - which is what's happening here - shouldn't be something they can go away with their hands clean on and not be called to account for.

I'd say it was the school board who ruined the prom since they're the ones who canceled it. They could have just let the lesbian couple go and it would have hurt no one.

    Not the same issue.

If someone showed up in a bikini, or drunk, they would just get tossed. Which is what they wanted to do with the girls. But the point is they weren't going to be allowed to toss them out.

If someone had sued, on the basis of discrimination, to have the right to come in a bikini, then I wouldn't be at all surprised if it produced the same result. For the same reason.

This is true. It wouldn't even have been a big deal. But they obviously weren't willing to do that so, since it was a discretionary event, they cancelled it. I personally would have preferred they simply not make a big deal out of it. Nevertheless, I fully support the right of anyone not to have to do something, that they are not required by contract to do, other than in the way they want to do it. I am thoroughly opposed to the "We have a right to a prom" mentality, and even more to the "We have a right to a prom that is run the way we want it, but you have to pay for it" mentality.

I think the school board is stupid all the way around. Not just for their actions by canceling the prom, but more importantly, they're very childish decision to pin it all on this girl. Way to have balls, guys. Blame it on the kids for your decision. What, did [-]the devil[/-] Jesus make you do it?

You have no room to talk. I know sewer rats who are more morally upstanding than you are. You give Christianity a bad name, and bring it down to the level of despots and thieves. You're the sour aftertaste when someone is given a sweet word from the Gospel. You're the feeling of nausea after someone is blessed with the warmth of grace and hope. You bring nothing but unpleasantness, discomfort, judgment and shame. You are a detriment to the faithful, and a stone weight around the neck of a good Samaritan. You are the epitome of the self righteous, the entitled fervent few, the fundamentalist fool. You hide behind words and take jabs at people who have done you no harm. You are a spiritual coward, and you hide behind the good deeds of others, and coast on their good will, soiling their good name. You are an impediment, a stumbling block. A wolf in sheep's clothing. Your brand of faith is a disease, a cancer that eats away at the hearts of good people. You're an ignorant zealot, and I despise you for making life harder for those who genuinely care about others.

You may post here like you belong, but the people here aren't stupid. They know you well already, and they already have you pegged for what you are. You can cozy up, you can think you're among friends, but you're not. You're not real, and these people know it, because if you were real, how sad and pathetic that would be to live a life so filled with empty rhetoric and a hollow heart.

Stories like this allow for a great deal of speculation, the biggest speculation being the "Why" of it all. Easy to say the student (like most teens) is looking for attention, validation or is simply rebelling to rebel. Just as easy to say she's an innocent young lady whose plan to take her significant other to the prom was thwarted by the school board's bigotry.

To me this story raises two other questions. First, should children be used to fight ideological issues for adults? If the adults in the equation had already resolved the issue of teenage sexuality it wouldn't be a potentially prom ending problem.

I know "For the children!" is the greatest rallying cry for every issue yet that doesn't mean they should be the ones forced to do the social engineering work so some future batch of kids can have a more politically correct prom.

My second question, What is the future for public education? The three biggest problems in my opinion are:
    • Our hyper litigious environment
    • Teacher transition from educator to babysitter
    • Indoctrination vs. education

Throw in all the violence and the cheering for teachers fucking students and it's clearly time for an upgrade.*

    Hmmm.

This puts a little different light on things:

    http://boingboing.net/2010/03/11/lesbian-panic-shuts.html

Now, it's still kinda shitty but that is not being denied entrance to the prom.

Considering they usually banned it entirely, it was steps in the right direction for this school. It's too bad they didn't go within the framework and proved to the school it just isn't an issue anymore they need to be worried about.

Instead, the ACLU had to butt in and convince them that their prejudice is justified and no one gets a prom.

    Oh...and she's pretty too:

Without checking the post history, I can't recall him ever posting EXCEPT when given the opportunity to play that role.
