As reported by the AP -

What does this mean? The US is not moving to the left . . . it's actually moving to the right. Look at that line about Michigan that I bolded. Now we can see in the census data how that state's reality-impaired policies are working out. California is not gaining a single seat in the house this time around, for the first time since it became a state - another probable indicator that people are voting with their feet on the state's goofy politics.

Can't wait for the redistricting to actually start. Should be loud and contentious.

The Democrats are facing a perfect storm in 2012: an unpopular President, a flagging economy, a disenchanted left wing, an energized Tea Party movement, and, now, a rather large demographic shift that favors the GOP.

If the GOP can come up with anyone remotely charismatic and competent to lead the ticket, they should win 40+ states.

I was thinking 52%/48% odds in favor of the GOP. :(

Huh, I figured Oregon would gain a seat.

And California not gaining any should tell Sacramento that using illegal immigrants to bolster its population doesn't help them come post-census US House reassignment time!

I'm afraid that if the Republicans don't get off their asses and do a good job this time that it might be their last chance.

    Ever.

The high-tax, high-regulation states continue to shed national influence. Yes, California's got a long way to go before it takes second place, but it's growth rate is nil and Texas's is 20 per cent! Florida is now New York's electoral equal.

I'm just thrilled they've found sufficient taxpayer money to waste tallying race counts - it's a real boon to the country to know where we keep our hispanics, blacks and asians.

How much of this population shifting is due to immigration, I wonder?

If California doesn't change now then I see the 2020 census being an electoral loss for them of one to two seats. Probably one since they gain illegals left and right.

The good thing here is Yankee Liberal states losing electoral votes.

Difficult to say. The changes in apportionment only reflect the relative sizes of the states' populations.

If you compare a state's average population growth rate to its average birth rate, I suppose that would give you a pretty good indication of immigration. If your birth rate put you on course for a 12% increase in population, but only 8% population growth occurred, you'd have to conclude that significant numbers of people emigrated (or died!).

That would be wrong so long as this nation is primarily only a two party system. Many people were saying that about the Republicans after 2008 too.

So long as people continue to elect Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, and Harry Reid, there will be opportunity for the opposing party to gain power. So long as there are idiots like George W. Bush and John McCain in the Republican Party we will see the re-emergence of the Democratic Party.

California's problem is that we are seeing a reduction in population rather than an increase which we saw for decades. Pretty much the only area of increase is with illegal aliens.

California shows signs of having hit a plateau. It hasn't gained any seats the last couple of decades and its population growth is just barely matching the national average.

Texas' growth, however, seems to be accelerating. Based on the current growth rates, Texas will be the biggest electoral prize within 40 years or so. I suspect that may be sooner as high taxes and a high cost of living is driving many out of California.

High taxes, high costs of living, companies fleeing the state because of ridiculous regulation sort of like the cap and trade law that was recently approved by the air resources board. When companies leave the state in droves, so do jobs, when jobs leave the state so do the people because most folks need to work.

Who would move here? High income taxes, high sales taxes, STILL high real estate prices, traffic congestion, fewer businesses settling here, etc.

Still, the weather is awesome, the colleges are good, and there's lots to do...

At this point yes. But, again, with laws like the cap and trade due to start kicking in 2012, CA is in for a world of hurt. We will see $9 a gallon gasoline, even higher costs for diesel, companies leaving the state because they do not want to pay for the stupid regulation.

It isn't difficult for states like Nevada, Arizona, and Texas to lure companies to their states. I was hearing that of all the states in the union right now, Texas seems to have the most robust job growth right now.

He'll definitely need to be a Reagan if he wants to get elected. Right now, I don't see who that might be within the Republican party.

Muad Dib welcomes his Yankee overlords! :santa_ok:

But this comes as no surprise.....low rent, good weather, plentiful jobs, etc. But still....how can the enlightened, educated people debase themselves by living among the suspender clad, WaffleHouse eating, banjo playing racist crackers? :santa_undecided:

It just might be halftime after all! Once you get the numbers, technology, logistics + economic power it's all over but the shouting!

And those votes going to the South. Liberals leaving CA is not good electorally for the GOP unless enough leave to really flip the state. You could take a million voters from CA in 2008 to Texas and flip the state for Obama and he would have still won CA by 2 million votes.

People don't become conservative just by virtue of moving to a Red state and vice-versa.

There's a real danger of having the reality-impaired move to areas with sane and sensible governance and then fucking it all up so it's just like wherever they were running away from.
