From Cold War brinkmanship to a junior-high girls' Twitter feud. Somewhere T.S. Eliot is Too bad Marshall McLuhan didn't live to see this.
That's one way to look at it. The other is not only is this feud taking place outside the real posibility of nuclear armageddon but the simple fact that it is taking place at all. How fucking cool is it that we live in an age where a Russian Prime Minister/President Elect and a Senator from Arizona are not only having a back and forth but are doing it in front of the world?
On that level, it is incredibly cool, which is why I mentioned McLuhan. The medium has become the message. I just couldn't help hearing Lewis Black's "and if you're Twittering, fuck you!!!"
Putin is doing a classic political diversion. He's got a serious problem with support at home so he lashes out at a foreign "enemy". McCain, a true WF'er at heart, had to shoot back in an electronic forum. Points to McCain on the rhetorical / tech front but, really girls? Isn't it time to leave junior high behind?
They should sign up for Wordforge. The flame war between those two in the Red Room would be priceless!
