I presume most teachers today have at least a Bachelors degree. If you haven't learned in 4 years of college that those kind of questions are inappropriate, I seriously doubt that any sensitivity class is going to help.

 

I'm sure recent history also teaches that anything even CLOSE to approaching the idea of slavery in any context other than being completely and absolutely horrible is going to ruffle a few feather, even below the Mason-Dixon line.

Ys, this is incredible, but living in Georgia I'm not really surprised.
The first thought out of my head was using "farmers" or "laborers" versus slaves. The math problem would have been the same and less of a distraction for the kids.

Actually if you're going to use agricultural "laborers" you'd have to include names like Juan, Jose, Hector, etc.

The sad part is that they probably honestly thought they were being sensitive in teaching about slavery in this way as well.

 

I dare say the whole idea of "diversity training" is at least as idiotic than math problems about slavery. Nobody to root for among the adults in this one. And don't give me any shit about a third grader knowing anything about outrage. The whole idea of slavery is just an abstract for them. This was a "that's naughty, I'm telling" to make trouble for someone else and get attention for himself.

This isn't just a public school problem.

I encounter morons everyday at work, some of whom have MBA or CA (CPA) designations after their names.

In my 20 years of professional life, I've learned that the more initials after the name, the more likely the person is clueless.

On another note:

I'm not saying you should have English majors writing all your math questions, but it would be nice if you didn't rely on ambiguous "code" phrases when clearer phrasing is easy to come up with: "If eight slaves each pick an equal number of oranges . . ."

The Goobertown Walmart has 36 shoppers and 4 employees at 3:00 A.M.
Their combined weight is 800,000 tons, and their combined I.Q. is 200.
