I can't even believe this is true.
So, not only one person thought this was a good idea, but several? There was a panel that put these questions together? It was a collective idea?!

"If Frederick gets 2 beatings per 20 hour work day and each beating reduces his productivity by 5% per work hour, how many oranges can he pick in one week?"

That's the 5th grade stuff right there.

    You can't fix stupid. :jayzus:

I presume most teachers today have at least a Bachelors degree. If you haven't learned in 4 years of college that those kind of questions are inappropriate, I seriously doubt that any sensitivity class is going to help.

I'm sure recent history also teaches that anything even CLOSE to approaching the idea of slavery in any context other than being completely and absolutely horrible is going to ruffle a few feather, even below the Mason-Dixon line.

    Morons.

But here's the really important question in this whole sordid imbroglio: What kind of fucked up childhood would result from having a name like "Sloan Roach"?

Ys, this is incredible, but living in Georgia I'm not really surprised.
The first thought out of my head was using "farmers" or "laborers" versus slaves. The math problem would have been the same and less of a distraction for the kids.

Actually if you're going to use agricultural "laborers" you'd have to include names like Juan, Jose, Hector, etc.

Pretty sure Mexican sensitivities are well looked after in that school.

The sad part is that they probably honestly thought they were being sensitive in teaching about slavery in this way as well.

I dare say the whole idea of "diversity training" is at least as idiotic than math problems about slavery. Nobody to root for among the adults in this one. And don't give me any shit about a third grader knowing anything about outrage. The whole idea of slavery is just an abstract for them. This was a "that's naughty, I'm telling" to make trouble for someone else and get attention for himself.

And a big, preemptive "FUCK YOU! :muad2: " to any ignorant fucktard who reads that and wants to react like anything other than unconditional, one-note condemnation automatically means I'm defending the faculty.

If these questions were on a test here in Augusta:

"Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Pick? Teacher bout to pick dey ass up off the flo' after I get through!

They were also asked, "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Too easy! ONE! One mothufucka gon' get a beating when I get down to that school!

This isn't just a public school problem.

I encounter morons everyday at work, some of whom have MBA or CA (CPA) designations after their names.

In my 20 years of professional life, I've learned that the more initials after the name, the more likely the person is clueless.

Surprising to see political correctness hasn't blanketed the entire nation. Yet this math question is more dopey than racist, more laughable than oppressive, and it has received the public outrage, and mockery it deserves.

    On another note:

I'm not saying you should have English majors writing all your math questions, but it would be nice if you didn't rely on ambiguous "code" phrases when clearer phrasing is easy to come up with: "If eight slaves each pick an equal number of oranges . . ."

Since I live here in Georgia, and have children in Georgia schools, let me take a stab at a word problem every Georgian can relate to:

The Goobertown Walmart has 36 shoppers and 4 employees at 3:00 A.M.
Their combined weight is 800,000 tons, and their combined I.Q. is 200.

And while complaining about this, I suspect that several people here are in favour of "teach the controversy" where evolution is concerned, right? :diacanu:

The slaves were racists for wanting to be free. The plantation owners were just making jokes, because that's what racism is. Just a joke. Or at least that's what my conservative friends here say. :)

Not quite getting you here. Is the controversy being they don't teach evolution in Georgia? They did in my kid's schools.

Anyway, stupidest thing EVER that I actually heard a fellow NCO say about evolution:

"That big gorilla Willie B. has been at the Atlanta Zoo for over 30 years now.
He still ain't evolved yet!" I was speechless, to say the least.
Hey, the dude was a higher rank than I ever achieved, so maybe he's smarter than I am, but damn.....that was some ignorant shit right there.

No, "teach the controversy" is the position that alternatives should be taught alongside evolution.

There are no alternatives with a scientific basis. If they want Creation, they can get their asses up on Sunday and go find a church. They have one every 100 feet in Georgia, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Mike's excusing modern black racism based on historical white racism. Because, y'see, black racism is A-OK, but white racism is eeeeeeeeeeeeeeevilllllllllll.

Or at least that's the line he's been indoctrinated with and is now socially obligated to push on everyone else.
