The Hunger Games

I have not yet seen it, or read the books.

Saw it yesterday. Enjoyed it, though I don't see how it quite lives up to the hype.

Never read the book so I can't speak to any comparisons there.

It's hype is based on the books. It's good movie though. Saw it yesterday. It actually does some disservice to the hype aspect.

In the books a love triangle is developed between Katniss, Gale, and Peeta. In the first book it's pretty clear that Peeta is madly in love with Katniss and she plays along to develop that aspect for the viewers of the games. In the movie it seemed under developed. At the end of the first book she pretty much straight up tells Peeta that she was faking it for the cameras totally breaking him. They seriously softened that in the film.

Wait... I thought this was the hunger game.

Saw it. Entertaining enough, but filled with situations where a character is in danger and a solution comes out of the blue. Seems like there are some missed opportunities in the plot, and, amazingly, no one ever seems to question this absurd world in which they exist. Jennifer Lawrence is a very good actress; I suspect she's about to make it to the next level of fame (doing rom/coms that Jennifer Lopez and Sandra Bullock are getting too old for).

6.5/10.

The only fans of the games are those that live in the Capitol. Those in the 12 districts hate it obviously but have no choice but to comply. They are conquered.

The film misses opportunity for social/political commentary...though that's not something that was in the first book much.

They should have had NKoreans as technical advisers!

In the book help is sent to them by sponsors. Literally out of the blue. So those that read the book had no problem with that aspect.

Not interested in the book(s) or movie. Don't see what's so great about the premise of fight to the death (for evil rich people's entertainment?).

It's not great. It's how the evil rich people control the poor people. To dissuade them from uprising again.

The plot is not as simple as it sounds.

So I take it you don't watch any professional sports?

I liked this story better when it was Battle Royale.

Nope. Not at all.

I meant apart from that. Yes, the sponsors are in the movie and, yes, their "donations" solve a couple of major complications the main characters otherwise would've had.

I saw this when it was a Japanese movie called Battle Royale, starring Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill.

Yeah, Captain X said he saw it too. I wondered who the other person on Earth was who'd heard of it. I guess it's you!

Well Paladin, you just have to read the book. But I can tell you that the forest is not really a forest. You know how it is...everything from the book can't be in the movie.

Like the fans of Harry Potter, they fill in gaps with their knowledge of the book. Kinda sucks for the people who haven't read it but its been that way for years when books are turned into movies. Everything you stated I know the answer to.

Doubt if there's an action movie one can name without similar contrivances, Paladin.

I am a grown, heterosexual male, and thus have no interest in teenager dramas.

Personally, I think you would like it. Its somewhat coldblooded and NOTHING LIKE TWILIGHT.

I'm gonna guess I'd want the entire cast to die, while the final body count falls short.

Have 0 interest in seeing this.

Have 0 interest in reading the novels.

It's not a teenager drama.

Hey, it's not my problem if you choose to confine yourself to only watching American-made TV and movies. Personally, I wonder why you choose to narrow your worldview like that.

Besides, plenty of people I know have watched Battle Royale.

My daughter wanted me to read it and I was like...umm, maybe. I thought it was some teenager junk. But then I decided to read it. It was great and then I read the whole trilogy.

I was glad I didn't stick to my first uninformed opinion. Now the movie is out and its pretty close to the book. Hey but to each his own.

I think that a few here that are knocking it will see it later. Like when it comes on cable or at a friends house or Netflix.

Its a movie with young people in it but is in no way a Twilight type movie. I see this aversion as much the same as Harry Potter hate. Many have seen it later and were surprised that they liked it.

But Harry Potter is a kid movie. The Hunger Games is not.

There is nothing wrong with admitting you read a teenagers book.

If you go to the bookstore it's in the Teenager section.

Same as Harry Potter. Doesn't mean you can't like it but you or others can't claim it's not a kid movie. It is. It is a movie for teenagers.
