    Re: star trek:into darkness

    Exactly.
Surak was considered the most important philosopher in the history of Vulcan. Kahless was basically the Klingon messiah. Colonel Green was supposed to be a monster responsible for more deaths than anyone in human history.

In the context of that, how likely is it that Lincoln was recreated because he was the only American president Kirk remembered from history class?

It's just a good thing Kirk was thinking of Lincoln instead of Morrison.

    OOOoooorrrr...

Maybe Kirk remembers Lincoln not as a messiah per se, but as the ultimate "good guy" in human history.

How many of us remember a particular figure in history as a "hero"? Kirk liked Lincoln, McCoy might have liked Robert E. Lee, Chekov might have liked Stalin or Lenin, Uhura might have gone for MLK or Frederick Douglass, Scotty might have liked James Watt, and Sulu might have gone for a samurai or Oscar Wilde (;)). None of those were in command, so their minds didn't get probed for a figure they thought most exemplified their ideal person.

ST '09 has its detractors. I'm a disliker of it, whereas others are haters. But you know what, those with various and/or varying degrees of negative opinion toward ST '09, like me, really have to & should see STiD, if not in the theater in now less than a month, then later in the year when it's available for home viewing.

Among the reasons we must see it are:

    * So we have an informed opinion of STiD.

    * Be able to participate in discussions about it.

    * STiD is a entirely new & different movie. So, just because we weren't too crazy about ST '09, or deeply loathed it, that doesn't mean we'll feel the same way about STiD. In fact we may, or some of us ST '09 detractors may be surprised by & actually LIKE STiD(?).

    * ST:TMP has its detractors, had them back when it first came out. Many of them went on to love STII:TWOK, with good reason. Imagine TMP detractors NOT having gone to see TWOK, or EVER see it?

Related to all this, but a tangent, of sorts, TOS' "The Naked Time" is on MeTV right now. I think it's the remastered version.

I don't know what MeTV is, but if I wanted to watch something as shitty as TOS I'd watch a random episode of Voyager.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

If anything, the trend seems to be making adolescence last into one's 30s. I would think that would make it even more difficult for someone to get real responsibility at so young an age.
Eh...that could be. But that doesn't seem to be the case in the movie's depiction of Earth culture or Starfleet. Kirk's hijinks have him in a disciplinary hearing. His refusal to follow Spock's command gets him thrown off the Enterprise. Rules and responsibility seem to be serious business.
Democracy was practiced 2500 years ago.
Institutions do change, values do change...but Starfleet, as depicted, doesn't seem to have changed all that much.
It's explicitly stated that the BULK of Starfleet is somewhere else (the Laurentian System, I believe) when the crisis occurs. So, presumably, there are a great many officers much more experienced than Kirk who are a few warp-days away. Given that the Enterprise needed some work after its battle with the Nerada, Starfleet had plenty of time to summon a more experienced officer back to take command.

Like I said, you go with it. I really liked Abrams' Star Trek, so don't take my criticisms the wrong way. I'm merely pointing out that the characters of TOSKirk and JJKirk are quite different and, given that, the latter's rise to captain is nothing short of miraculous!

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Exactly the point I've made before to the same argument - this isn't the age of sail, and it would only get more complex in a world like the Star Trek universe. If anything, one would think it would take longer to master it all than the traditional 4 years, and since humans supposedly live well past the century mark, entering Starfleet at an older age wouldn't exactly be out of the question.

 That's just a lazy, pathetic fanboy attempt to win any argument by default. "If you haven't seen it, you can't comment on it!" "If you watch it, you're a hypocrite!" :dayton: Bullshit.

I sure hope no one is comparing anything positively to a character everyone including the actor hated, and who was admittedly a Gary Stu for GR. :garamet:

Talking to the chap from Dark Horizons, who has just seen the movie at the world premiere in Oz.

He won't give away spoilers story but implies the first movie was better, this one being more "uneven". I asked him if this film have a Roddenberry-esque message to it, which was what I felt was lacking from the first film, and he says that it's actually less Roddenberry-esque than the first one :(. Sounds like the movie is is going to be your standard cookie-cutter summer actioner and little more. I may have to join the ranks of Dayton and Captain X if this turns out to be true.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Kirk's sudden promotion was the one thing I was really unhappy about. A simple post-credit scene, a la Marvel, with Spock Prime in a room of a shadowy figures discussing Spock providing them with information in exchange for making Kirk Captain would have easily explained the promotion whilst setting up future plot lines.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Good, sounds like it has the potential to be great.

The ironic thing is that these new movies are the most Roddenberry-esque out of them all because all they have done and will do is make money. People are kidding themselves when they think Gene wasn't all about the cash.

So the movie has premiered in Australia and we now know who Cumberbatch is playing......

    Re: star trek:into darkness

    How is it explained then?

    From the linked review:

"Cumberbatch is awesome. He’s a bad guy. I’m not going to say what bad guy, neither confirming nor denying the K-theory – and he’s an excellent villain."

    and

"Plot-wise, I don’t want give much away, apart from the fact that Cumberbatch’s character is ex-Starfleet and seems intent on waging war on his old mates."

How does that add up? If in fact the claim is true of course...

These are all very explainable questions. I'm just theorizing as I haven't seen the movie or read any spoilers.

That's good, considering most of Roddenberry's ideas were terrible. One was a movie idea to have Spock traveling back in time to assassinate JFK, and another was his background essays on Ferengi genitalia for TNG. And the whole "no wrinkled clothing in the future" on TNG.

This. I was thinking something similar. The best part of TOS wasn't Rodenberry, it was people like Coon and Fontana et al.
