Be interesting if they actually did a war (and space battles) more realistically. Ships not in the same frame, opposing fleets using real tactics (instead of typical Star Trek swoop and shoot), et cetera.

And even better, 23rd century ground combat! Now, regardless of what I think about the Abramsverse the chance to see the 23rd century equivalents of Starfleet Marine Corps (hopefully) tanks vs. KDF tanks would actually get me excited.

Oh shit someone found a way to get Dayton to like Abramsverse.

Got to admit though that it sounds cool on the face of it.

2017 is too damn far away.

There's Klingons and space battles in the movie coming out this week. Yet you've made it clear you aren't interested. A bit more action and you're there?

    How fucking shallow is that?

They said Paramount wants it for 2016 for the 50th anniversary.

They'd fucking better, the 40th had jack fucking shit, and the 45th just had a Google doodle.

While a war certainly provides a dramatic conflict, I wouldn't want to see a plot involving one just for the sake of gettin' stuff blowed up real good.

A movie where, say, the Federation and Klingon Empire get maneuvered into war by another power and in which Kirk and co. have to stop the war and get the Klingons as allies against that power could be interesting.

    ^Forget that!!

I want to see one where the Federation WINS the war!

No god like aliens intervening. No allies come out of nowhere to save the Federation. No bizarre new technological breakthrough that comes out of the blue to enable the Federation win.

No Klingons deciding that the Federation are such honorable warriors that they'll join with them and walk off into the sunset singing "but we can all be friends".

The Federation is ALWAYS losing a war.

"Yesterdays Enterprise", the entire Dominion War story arc (they couldn't win without the Klingons help, the Prophets help, the Romulans help, the Cardassians help........)

You want to see a whole war in a 2 hour movie? :wtf:

It doesn't have to be a four or six year conflict.

One of the most decisive wars of the 20th century was the Six Day War. It lasted a whopping....six days.

A hypothetical nonnuclear war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in central Europe was generally projected to last about 30 days or less before it was resolved one way or the other.

And yeah, I think you could show most of the high points of a Klingon/Federation War in only a two hour movie.

That is one of my points. They are always in the process of "losing" yet they end up winning (or at least a draw) through some bizarre twist of fate.

and how would you have the Federation "lose" a war with the Klingons that left the Trek franchise remotely intact and recognizable for the future?

    Use your imagination.

Do you imagine that if, say, the Klingons were able to take the Federation fairly easily--perhaps with some strange new weapon--that it would necessarily mean all of the worlds of the Federation would be lying in ruins? It might be a straightforward occupation-type scenario. Klingon ships in orbit around Earth, Klingon administrators beaming down to lay down the new laws.

You know, that might actually make for a good plot. The Enterprise is returning from a deep space mission, when the Klingon Empire suddenly launches a successful offensive against the Federation and seizes control of Earth. The Enterprise is the only Federation ship near Earth that hasn't surrendered/been destroyed.

AND IT'S UP TO CAPTAIN KIRK AND HIS CREW TO UNCOVER THE SECRET OF THE KLINGON WEAPON AND SAVE THE FEDERATION FROM KLINGON OCCUPATION!

Yeah, that could be the start of a decent plot.

I'd like to see a villain change the past of a Federation planet that isn't Earth, and have it fuck up the galaxy WAAAAY more than all the human-based time travel stories combined.

Like, maybe some race as unassuming as the Tellarites is key.
Wipe out the Tellarites, the whole galaxy re-configures.

Wiping out the Tellarites might be a good thing, though. Y'ever notice that not once has bacon made an appearance in Star Trek? Now I'm not saying that being allied with a race of bipedal bacon people and being all "enlightened" and "sensitive" is why...

But I'm not not saying that, either. :?:

Having it not be Earth that's threatened would be nice for a change, since it's pretty much the standard sci-fi plot, but I'm guessing only sci-fi fans would actually be appreciative of that change.

Yeah, THE EARTH IS THREATENED is a compelling, high-stakes plot point, but it's been used to death (AbramsTrek, NEM, TVH, TMP) in the movies, but I don't think we've seen a THE EARTH IS SUBJUGATED plot yet.

It would be nice to have a Star Trek film that revolves around a mission in deep space for a change. And one that doesn't involve a superweapon or a revenge plot.

Anything's possible, I'spose. They finally made a Mission: Impossible film that didn't involve an IMF traitor (the first three did).

Exploration and deep space are for TV. I'd really love to see a TV series based on the Abramsverse, minus the logic snafus.

DS9 did it, the episode where some crazy ass admiral is actually a founder.

Or the galaxy without Earth - I don't think ENT really hammered why humans are so important to the Federation, and a future movie could fix that.

Just have all the founder members pretty much disliking each other (as ENT did with the Vulcans/Andorians) but needing a mutual defence pact against the Klingons, and since they all look down on the humans... Would explain why humans are so dominant in Starfleet. Humanity is the 'glue' because we're seen as "mostly harmless" (anything for a H2G2 reference!)

And without Earth, instead of hanging together they get to hang separately when the Klingons come to town.

Then something bigger comes for the Klingons. A big screen "Yesterday's Enterprise" type 'verse, with Kirk battling with the Klingons to save Qo'nos in order to fix the timeline, bring out the big guns like Kor... Could be good, could be crap.

When your enemies are mightier than you are, it helps to have allies.

You assume that no one is mightier than the Federation.

Of course because I associate the Federation with the United States and no one is more powerful than the United States.
