I posted how to get rid of it, too. It's not my fault if you are too lazy to click my name, click settings and uncheck "Games". It takes two seconds and you won't see my posts about games. You can also click the game's name and block it, and you will never see anything again. Where, unfortunately, the stupid games will nag friends without my wanting them to. So...can a WFer click a box and prevent their posts from being shared on Facebook? Supposedly posts belong to the author and not the board so is there a choice like you have for avoiding games?
I dunno...all I am doing is saying why someone people don't like an easy connection to FB and that is one of them. Like Muad pointed out, FB's ever changing policies is another reason to be cautious.
We're not friends on facebook, it hasn't been a problem for a while. Now, noone wants Muad's stuff where he doesn't want it, but worrying about it seems a bit ridiculous when he has a facebook account. I delete friends all the time based solely on what gets put in my timeline via them. You guys seem to want your cake and eat it too.
I've heard that Tasvir has been linking every post from here on Facebook for years. And shockingly, nobody can figure out who even Tasvir is, since he goes by a different name on Facebook.
He can. He can leave and that is possibly the price that will be paid for the change. You guys can, like all owners do what you want, but there is almost always some kind of cost with every decision you make. That is why the job isn't easy.
facebook buttons should go away. it's not because someone could post something there, it's just that FB tracks people throught like buttons even if they are not members there. yes, FB is shitty like that and site owners shouldn't support that big brother shit.
You did see the post Lanz made about possibly closing the board entirely if Anc and Co hadn't stepped up? And I know you certainly wouldn't have wanted Nick in a position of power, either, since he was Lanz's first choice. Well, not he can get to see what it's like with the shoe on the other foot. And when he makes an unpopular call, he'll get the mud slung at him like he's done with others--just like many here learned after they broke off from TBBS and formed this place.
The link you posted says FB puts a tracking cookie on non-members that visit the www.facebook.com webpage not about tracking non-facebook users on webpages that have the FB shortcut. Nick can confirm but I'm pretty sure FB doesn't have the power to put tracking cookies on WF users browsers just by having the shortcut.
Because the WF site will have the button, it will be participating in the spying on people who have the cookies in their browsers. They will be getting information about our visitors because of the presence of that button. You probably don't care or see it as important. Some people do.
here's one of many: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/27/as-like-buttons-spread-so-do-facebooks-tentacles/?_r=0 in short: it's just a little pic. every server knows which IPs requests an image (they have to; that's not evil). of course FB analyzes that information and creates profiles. log on/register with that IP and they could pretty much already tell you who you are, what you like etc. cookies are of course the next step. tamar has already explained it.
Ah, okay, so there's a link on what we're talking about here. Thanks! We'll do some research and get back to y'all.
If the buttons do as Tamar and Cass suggest, I think they will likely disappear. That said, this isn't an issue, because I'm pretty sure Tex plans to sell the data to both Facebook and Google anyway.
Tamar is right -- it's complicated, but read up on it again, and you'll see. While it's not going to keep me away from Wordforge by any means, I would also feel happier without the FB buttons, for the reasons mentioned above; and also because I see no cause to encourage people to post other posters' WF stuff on Facebook in the first place.
well, for a certain percentage i could throw in the Dossiers. i'm sure the Tamarchives are for sale too
Hmm, in my research I found this: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/04/4-simple-changes-protect-your-privacy-online Good tips and tricks for everyone.
All of that is good advice, but it doesn't get around the basic problem: The way Facebook works, other people who decide to share their information often cannot help but share some of yours as well, if you have any RL or virtual connection to them. (Just imagine what it's like for the next generation -- there are kids whose private data have been on Facebook since they were born, who aren't even old enough yet to know what Facebook is.) It's not up to Wordforge to save the world from Facebook, but perhaps those buttons just aren't worth the trouble?
No there isn't. Just stuff you've pulled off the likes of Facebook which you deem suitable to distribute via PM. One of the many reasons the obseqious arse kissing witnessed over your years of "service" to WF was a bullshit. Still, no need to worry about that anymore.
Yeah...because I can't read Facebook anymore and have no ability to Private Message now. Fool. I never needed or used my staff position for information. Never. I don't have the technical ability one needs to find an IP useful for information gathering. I hardly ever did anything like that anymore. There was only a couple of instances ever that people like you milked to death to create a reputation far beyond reality, I go with it because it's funny to me. But hey...now if I feel like doing it again I have no reason not to, do I. Nothing to restrain me at all. Nothing to worry about anymore, indeed.
I'd vote for nixing the Facebook buttons because they don't really serve a purpose with the type of board WF is, so just add unnecessary clutter.
