Not to feed trolls, but lest someone comes in late and gets confused: Suicide came up because it seemed a risk after the accident, given general statistics, not specific indications in this case. As anyone who actually read this and the other thread knows. And I just lost basic respect for three people.
Because, sadly, many major injuries can and do cause acute depression. While some of that can be countered with medication while in the hospital it still takes weeks for them to kick in. And if you think we are kidding or over reacting - go to any doctor and ask. Addendum: any head injury can lead to depression as well.
Can we cut the drama and just keep this thread for well wishes and people who want to help Shep in her time of need?
Holy fucking GOD please don't let this thread spin uncontrollably toward the public transportation/urban sprawl cliff!
The truth is available in this thread: there was an accident at work there are home-life complexities making it harder to provide assistance Nova's family is very short on money and dependent on her Walmart income. That is sufficient for understanding that help is needed. There are people at Wordforge who maintain contact with Nova outside of this place. These people are able to vouch for the information, and trolls do not have a right to know all the personal details of Nova's life. They are free not to help. That's really the entire deal.
You're right. We can't and won't fix the problems in Nova's life, no matter how much we might wish otherwise. We're talking about a bandaid, something to bridge the gap between the last check she got from Walmart and when she receives what ever sort of disability/workman's comp/settlement comes along. There is a reality that her family is right now at risk and Nova can't help them herself. If we're able to step in for the short term, it will make a big difference for her. But I maintain no illusions that we can fix her life. That's really not what this is about. Not even remotely.
How about whatever we're able to raise is a stopgap until longer-term measures (e.g., workers comp/disability) kick in? Something to cover immediate expenses and relieve a little bit of worry for the moment. Anyone over the age of four should be able to understand that. If you were at work and someone said "Hey, So-and-So's laid up in the hospital; we're taking up a collection for the family," I'm sure you'd keep a death-grip on your wallet and raise just as many objections.
What's the name of the game where you start a phrase in one ear, it goes around a circle, and comes out completely different at the end? Yes speed is paramount, but so is critical thinking. Finding people in MS is needed first. Someone to act as liaison.
Garamet is the one in this thread making the most sense with the least drama. Make of that what you will.
I too have Prime, and I would be totally willing to send a few things their way. I would've responded sooner, but I've been at sea the past few days and just saw the thread. I wish Nova the best.
Normally you'd think the first thing a teenage boy wants to do is get his drivers license - being able to drive is a huge step toward establishing your independence. Usually the failure to get the license, or a lack of motivation to even try, is a sign of very big problems.
Sorry, this doesn't pass the smell test. What seems clear at this point is that the circumstances of Shep's injury were not as originally reported. It seems this was not some workplace accident involving him falling off a ladder while stocking shelves. Rather, it was a suicide attempt. What has also become clear is that rather than being upfront & honest about these circumstances, Anc & the rest of the "inner circle," (and BTW - I have found it quite interesting that neither Flow or Tex have chosen to participate in this thread), have decided that they and only they are to be allowed access to "secret" info, and the rest of us who are being hit up for charity will just have to be content with the morsels that the "inner circle" decide we're worthy of having. Sorry, but I'll make my own decisions about whether or not I have "sufficient" information. The strange thing is that those who are inclined to donate money I'm sure would do so regardless of what Shep did to himself. So why the cover-up? Tell you what gul, go ahead and post a link to Shep's Facebook page so we can all go and look for ourselves. Shouldn't be a problem, if there's nothing to hide. I'll be waiting for the link. Or are you afraid someone might tell crazy wifey what Wordforge's opinion of her is?
I had a recent situation where a distant cousin, who has a life-long history of chronic mental health & substance abuse problems, identifies herself as lesbian and is caring for her ex-lover's 10 y/o child, called up begging for money because she had prematurely spent her disability check and said she couldn't buy food. Sometimes you just have to make decisions about what you will & won't allow into your life. I said sorry, can't help, and made it clear I didn't want her calling us again. The bleeding hearts will never understand the necessity of having to set and maintain appropriate boundaries. But the adults do. I'll leave it to others to decide which is currently running Wordforge.
But health care is a function of your socioeconomic status, which itself is a function of your worth as a human being. Universal healthcare is a communist plot to destroy Christian America.
Whatever is going on in Flashlight right now goes beyond my understanding of evil. I just look at it and see some kind of moral brick wall.
Or many other states other than Mississippi. As to this thread, let the children play. Once we have more information about what help is needed and how best to help we'll have a thread dedicated just to that, where trolling will not be tolerated.
I'll give Flashlight some points for creativity. The conspiracy theory he's spun would have done JohnM proud. But aside from that, yeah, extremely poor taste, even for him.
Yes, I'm definitely getting a whiff of TBBS here.... Ask hard questions, you're a "troll" or a "child."
Most of us would prefer to hear whether you have any suggestions for how best to help out Nova and her family.
