The travel ban would probably be counter productive. The risk to us is small but if you block medical personnel going to the regions where they are needed then the outbream will get much worse and that means it will just spread even more.

We need experts crafting policy not emotional know nothings motivated by irrational fear.

How does banning people from coming here from Liberia prevent people here from going to Liberia? Have you ever been on an airplane and noticed that people on board aren't simultaneously going in both directions?

Obama does indeed have a big decision.

Should he flop his ball on with a sand wedge or try to run the green with a low flying 8 iron?

Something tells me you don't know what a travel ban means. It means a ban on all travel not just one way. Do you think airlines will fly just one way or do you think they won't want the multimillion dollar planes to just be stuck empty on the runway in west Africa? Think a little here.

People talk without thinking too much. Your post is proof of such.

A travel ban need not be applied to every human on the planet.

You can still send in medical personnel and equipment.

If someone needs to come back they can be quarantined and tested for the disease before being allowed onto a plane.

The other big issue is it would massively damage the economies of west Africa when they're already hurting thus making it even harder for them to fight the outbreak. How do you get supplies there with a travel ban? How do you unload a ship or a plane?

When you get down to the details it WOULD massively harm the medical efforts and make the situation worse for no good reason other that Fox has whipped stupid people into irrational panic for ratings. Fuck that.

    Idiot.

The military can unload its stuff on its own.

A travel ban must be in place to prevent any further chance of this disease spreading.

The world has been dodging bullets at this point. A dead guy in Dallas, an infected nurse in Spain and now an infected health care worker in Dallas again.

And there is still travel between these infected countries and non-infected countries. It's time to bring that all to a screeching halt. No travel into or from that area of the world with the exception of certain people who will be quarantined and tested before being let back into non-infected areas.

Speaking of not thinking, Zombie's post is a perfect example. To paraphrase "we'll just send stuff there but not let them come back for a month". Gee, what shipping company or airline would agree to let their ships or planes and employees just sit there empty for a month? No one would agree to send anything there and instead would just black list the area so, no, medical supplies wouldn't get there or at least there would be a hell of at less.

All because Zombie is once again scared and wetting his pants over something which every medical expert says can easily be dealt with in the US. Thanks but I'll trust the CDC on their topic of expertise before I trust the bed wetters who watch Fox.

They have procedures in place you fucking idiot.

They are already doing it. Or did you miss the American military already sending in people and supplies?

You don't think they can't unload a plane or ship without contaminating it? How fucking stupid are you?

Zombie is right--military personnel are being sent over there as we speak. They have no such restrictions and it's easier to quarantine a military plane than commercial airliners.

Granted, we don't have the issues that make the spread in Liberia so common like eating bush meat or washing the dead patients, but that doesn't mean we can't do some common sense shit. Should we just stop testing for HIV in blood transfusions because it's only a handful of people in the population that have it?

If I owned an airline, I'd do the responsible thing and ground the planes myself. :bailey:

Let's say the military can get essential supplies there from the US (ignoring that most of the supplies actually come from Europe)... Ok, most of it is still currently going via regular commercial service and I'm betting the US isn't willing to devote enough assets to doing a massive Berlin airlift type scenario so, yes, fewer goods will make it there, you will have to pay higher prices for those goods, the blockade would do immense damage to the economies of the dozen or so nations involved in west Africa, and, no, the US military can't replace all those private transport links even if it was willing to make a maximum effort, which it is not.

In short, you're just creating a worse problem for absolutely no good reason other than to placate irrationally scared bed wetters like Zombie. I'm not interested in massively negatively effecting the lives and welfare of hundreds of millions of people just because Zombie is pooping his pants over things he knows nothing about. Yes, I will continue to trust the experts at the CDC over irrational know nothing chicken littles.

Um, sorry, but that's ridiculous. With a travel ban, you can fly as many planes in and out of Africa as you want, you just don't fly passengers out without having them go through quarantine. Even without the quarantine, supply runs would be unaffected because planes don't carry Ebola (aluminum is immune to the virus). The only way Ebola can get on an airplane in Liberia is for an Ebola victim to get on the airplane. So your planes can land, they can unload, and they can fly out, without an Ebola victim ever having to set foot inside.

To see what negative effects the current Republican fear mongering is having there have been cases in the US, mostly in Texas, where west Africans who have been in the US for decades and never been back to Africa have been attacked in the streets while others have been told to not come to work out of fear they have ebola. This is happening in the US and it is retarded but that is the power of the irrationality and fear mongering of the right wing noise machine.

They appeal to irrational fears because they think it will some how allow them to attack the president, just like how people like Darrell Issa lie and claim ISIS is sneaking in from Mexico, this what the right wing does and people like Zombie get played for a fool every time.

We need policies based upon facts and science not based upon emotion or political opportunism.

Wow. 2 Ebola cases in the US and some people lose it and go apeshit already. As a practice run for a real zombie apocalypse, this is a huge FAIL, so far.

Would that be the same CDC that was wrong about Ebola finding its way to the US? Would that be the same CDC that just had Obama explain to Liberians that they can't catch Ebola by sitting next to someone on a bus, while they told our personnel in Liberia not to ride on public transportation because they might catch Ebola? Would that be the same CDC that just announced that a nurse was infected in Dallas, despite following all the CDC precautions? Would that be the same CDC that's suffered a string of potentially horrific protocol breaches, and that nearly allowed smallpox loose in Washington DC?

When you have an isolated epidemic, you cannot make it worse by not allowing the carriers to fly to foreign cities. In fact, if you let it reach foreign cities the epidemic starts all over in a new location. It's bad enough risking a spread to Europe or the US, but can you imagine what will happen if somebody carries it to Bangladesh, India, China, or Southeast Asia and it starts spreading? Can you imagine how much more economic damage would be done if China has to be quarantined instead of a tiny third world country like Liberia? Liberia is a small and very poor country. For a billion dollars we could pay every one of them to sit on their butt for the next six months until the situation is under control.

Let me put this in a way you can understand. The rich elites who exploit African slave labor to keep their chocolate industry running are opposed to the ban because it might cost them money. They know that if someone does carry Ebola out of Liberia, they'll probably be traveling to a poor immigrant community, like the man in Dallas, and only infect the poor and minorities. Who cares if they all die? They're poor, so f*** em! It might even get into the gay communities and do a rapid burn through, which is good, and hopefully it can take out all the heroin users before the CDC can even react. Kill off all the undesirables, while making even more money off slave chocolate. What's not to like?
