Uh oh. It's sounding like it was a mistake to go PG-13 on this one. Well, I guess I'll see soon enough.
Well, my hope has dwindled to "maybe I'll like it despite the critics." Whether I like it or not, though, this is probably going to be another black mark for DC. Even the few positive reviews are very qualified.
None of the press I've read about Leto's Joker has made me interested. He comes off as trying waaay too hard. Like a 17 year old with a Hot Topic gift card, trying to be as "bad-ass" and "hardcore" and "edgy" as he possibly can.
We got spoiled by Ledger's out-of-the-park performance (helped by a script that had a good, fresh take on the character). Still, I think Leto is a very talented actor. I'm interested in seeing his take even if it doesn't raise the bar.
...although to be fair, is this any surprise? For all the hype, does anyone have any idea what the movie is about? I mean, who is the villain? Why did the government feel the need to assemble these guys? To rescue the President from New York? To stop Godzilla? The trailers had the Stink of Fail about them even before the reshoots. Dong of Justice is DC Warner's "answer" to Avengers. This is DC Warner Guardians of the Galaxy--edgy antiheroes, AM radio soundtrack... You'd think people who've been in the moviemaking business as long as Warner Brothers and in comic books as long as DC would know something about telling a story. And about making money. Because they're intent to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. Eventually even Paladin and Diacanu's parents are going to get sick of shelling out $$ for drivel. Maybe.
Margot did a good job of playing Jane in the new Tarzan movie, alongside Alexandar Skarsgard, who also played the vampire Eric Northman on HBO's True Blood.
And I was looking forward to a decent movie with Harley Quinn....which we were supposed to get in the early 2000s before Batman and Robin poisoned that well for over a decade.
I said it elsewhere, but Marvel only had the good fortune of Iron Man being an unqualified hit. Without Iron Man, the rest of phase 1 until Avengers hit hard were varying degrees "ehhh, it's all right", with critics. DC is three movies in, and hasn't hit their Iron Man yet. Without that, they're floundering a bit, but they'll still get to an "Avengers". I'd say "Man of Steel", is probably their "Thor". BvS is probably their "Iron Man 2" (critically). Until I see "Suicide Squad", I dunno where that fits in yet. I predict "Wonder Woman", will be their "Captain America", and "Justice League", should finally hit as their "Avengers".
That right there tells me you're smoking kryptonite krack. IM2 was head and shoulders above BvS and I didn't even like IM2.
John Campea likes it. He does say the story is "a hot mess", and the enemies are disposable zombies like the Chitari in Avengers, but the characters and humor and action make up for it.
Addendum, John Schnepp liked it better than anyone at Collider, and he threw the biggest hissy of anyone over the theatrical cut of BvS.
To each his own. I loved BvS and hated Ironman 2 I'll see this for myself and make up my own mind as I rarely agree with critics these days.
Slightly encouraged that Campea liked it (even if he admits it's a "hot mess") and the two Schmoes didn't outright hate it, but, Jesus, this one is getting some bad reviews. Mick LaSalle, the San Francisco Chronicle critic, savaged it: Well, guess I'll know for sure tonight.
