That's got to be beyond all expectations for the film. It did almost as well as BvS. It's getting to within spitting distance of Deadpool which was indisputably a huge success. DC's still got some ground to gain on Marvel (and I don't care which one "wins" as long as they keep making better and better films), but three movies into their cinematic universe, they're doing pretty well.
Wow! DC's really tapped into something if a second-tier property like Suicide Squad is outgrossing one of their flagship characters. Still, to be perfectly honest, I think Suicide Squad benefited from very weak competition. But if it had done $500 or $600 million, it'd still be a big success.
In a strange way, this really proves how influential critics still are. Not in affecting the box office; but in affecting the public image of a movie's success or failure despite a completely contrary box office result.
Just passed "Winter Soldier", worldwide. http://www.cbr.com/suicide-squad-passes-captain-america-the-winter-soldier-at-global-box-office/
That's amazing. It also suggests that DC is catching up to Marvel very quickly. At least in terms of box office. SS was fun, but Winter Soldier is a much better movie.
I think some of the things we botch about, general audiences just either don't think about, don't know about or simply don't care.
I'm not so sure about that. Winter Soldier has a 92% rating among audiences on RottenTomatoes; Suicide Squad is running a 67%. So, general audiences did seem to react more favorably to Winter Solider. I'd be interested to know if anyone here thought SS was the better film.
I don't think it's a better film, I just think it's not as bad as some made out to be. I think milinials haven't been burned by DC as we have been. They didn't have Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Catwoman, and Superman Returns to deal with, they had Nolan Batman and Man of Steel. Those four films are far more superior.
I think a lot of the negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and the like have more to do with members of the PC crowd knocking it over Harley/Joker more than anything else.
Wow! That's impressive. Okay, DC...more like that. Edit: Are you sure? BoxOfficeMojo shows it still about $40 million down in worldwide gross. It has edged out Deadpool in the foreign box office. Either way, it's still impressive.
Yea, it's not that bad. DC did try for some fun this time, but it all rests on the shoulders of Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Without those two it would be another bleak, dark and joyless affair. Also, none of the other team members are real characters IMHO. They are just backdrop to Harley's antics. Which is sad because at least the guy who plays Diablo was doing a great job. Good: Bat Affleck, Joker, Harley, Diablo, Deadshot. Half decent story. Bad to non existent: Everyone else. Anyway, when I watched this, I made an experiment. As in, I watched it back to back with IRON MAN 3 which I had only seen half of until now. SS is outright amateurish in direct comparison in every conceivable way. And yet it's the best so far of the DC movie universe. I mean really, what is going wrong at DC? They have had a decade to watch Marvel with its largely unknown characters and they just don't get why those movies are beloved by millions and theirs aren't. DC lives off the iconic Superman and Batman brands. Take them away and they have nothing. Funny thing is... there are people at DC who get it. FLASH and ARROW are really good shows (I don't watch the others). Why the hell aren't they building on those? While I mostly like Snyder's work as a director I don't think he's the right Kevin Feige for DC. He's a technician, not a nerd. You need a nerd mastermind for that kind of movies. Someone who gets how superhero movies are about fun and excitement, not deep thought and super angst.
DC agrees, that's why this year, Geoff Johns became boss of the DCEU, with Affleck with heavy creative input. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Johns#DC_Extended_Universe
Runtime and features on the blu-ray. http://www.cbr.com/suicide-squad-extended-cut-runtime-and-special-features-revealed/
I thought it was quite poor, and I liked the DC movies more than most - probably more than I liked the Marvel ones.
I feel like a really good movie is in there somewhere but it's too heavily edited, scattered, choppy and has way too many classic songs.
The extended cut is the version they should have put out. They got rid of the hula hoop dancing, added more scenes with Harley and Deadshot, made Rick Flag a better character and it all around seems to flow better. The problem is D.C. needs to to put out a good movie the first go around and stop relying on extended cuts. ETA: it also made me like Leto's Joker a tiny bit better.
