I've seen only two movies at the theater all year - Avengers & Ant-Man. The last will be Star Wars. There's just nothing being released right that I feel I can't wait until the Blu-ray to watch on my 75" home screen.
Finally saw Spy. Yeah, third act bends reality, and gets cartoony, but still pretty good. Even more excited about Ghostbusters reboot now.
I just watched "Blow Out" a suspense drama starring John Travolta, directed by Brian Depalma. Very good movie!
I watched "A Little Chaos" because it was one of Alan Rickman's last movies, which he co-wrote and directed. I enjoyed it. ETA: New York Times review.
Hell or High Water Chris Pine and Ben Foster play brothers who rob a series of banks, but not for the reason you might think. Jeff Bridges plays the Texas Ranger trying to nab them. Excellent film. Great acting all around (especially Bridges who just nails his part), great cinematography, and some social commentary. 8.5/10
Deadpool. 9.5 It is my second favorite superhero movie of all time, right after Superman. It is also my second favorite comedy of all time, right behind Spaceballs.
I genuinely don't understand what people see in Deadpool. It was quite entertaining but nothing special IMO.
I love the character of Deadpool because he eschews the traditional superhero stereotype without having to be dark and brooding about it. He's the merc with a mouth, and for those of us who love wordplay and cultural references intertwined in an action comedy, it's a damned funny film.
Finally saw Rogue One. Much better than Episode VII, which was just a rehash of themes from the original film. My wife expressed her frustration that there just haven't been any good characters to like since the OT, though. This weekend we watched the BluRay of The Island, a film I somehow missed in first run. It was basically Logan's Run!
I also finally saw Rogue One. Not perfect, but I actually enjoyed it more than I did The Force Awakens (and I liked TFA). 7.5/10
Ended up watching Mom and Dad Save The World last night, pretty funny movie. Jon Lovitz is the idiot conqueror of a planet of idiots and wants to blow up the earth because inferiority complex, but falls in love with Teri Garr, and kidnaps her and her husband, Jeffery Jones, while on an anniversary road trip. Killer mushrooms and dog and fish people ensue.
I watched Sicario a few weeks ago and really liked it. Same screenwriter as Hell or High Water and though I liked the latter movie a lot more, Sicario is still pretty damn good. The bridge scene is freakin' awesome. 7/10
Caught 'Arrival' and 'ID4: Resurgence' on a flight Arrival was really good, uses themes I've seen before, but at no point was the audience nose-fed data (Hawkeye throws out a number, and yes audience, you are supposed to work it it's 1/12 without a 10 minute exposition scene with a bureaucrat.) Usually with sci-fi movies, you get heavy sci-fi with the other elements tacked on, in this instance the sci-fi was what was tacked on and it was refreshing. 9/10 'ID4:Resurgence' or 'How To Take Several Good Concepts And Proceed To Piss Them Up a Wall' The Moonbase looked like it was built by the Spaceballs, the Captain Kirk knock-off was right out of a straight-to-betamax (VHS had standards) 1980's film that may have been called 'Space Hike', the product placement warning should've been replaced with a 'nation placement warning' given it was one long blowjob to the Chinese backers and Emmerich should feel a sense of shame. It was a fun popcorn movie, but still. And given the first one holds up pretty well for a film that is basically a patchwork of near-misses over some thin plot cloth, surely a sequel wouldn't be that hard to do well. Apparently it is. So frustrating. A World Government? Where are the doubters? Why have the US in charge and miss out on some juicy friction with snotty Eurotrash or Brit? Alien tech? Let's see the repaired cities, let's see the have-nots. lets see the changed culture. African warlords fighting a ground war for years? Can we not do better than Zulu 2? The first 15 minutes gave us enough food for several good movies set in that universe, and instead we got... What? Earth is ruined again, so lets go lead those rebel forces. We meet aliens in real life, apparently we just bitch-slap them out of the sky and they'll be wanting us to lead them next! I can't help but thinking someone like Verhoeven would have loved all the chances of subversion with something like this, Emmerich just gave us weak soup. 6/10 for entertaining, minus 200 points for missing more easy targets than a Star Wars stormtrooper.
Watched Fast 8 earlier today. What can I say, it's just another one of the movies from the franchise. Still, it was a stupid fun movie to watch, and damn they do get addictive once you start watching them. The highpoints for me was Jason Statham, this one gave him a better opportunity to show off his comedic talents which he did very well. Another good addition, well actually continuation was Kurt Russell, he's still the slightly goofy, mostly funny shadow operation guy. Still think that Tyrese Gibson's character is the worst one, but at least this time he only about 85% cringe worthy instead of 99%. Overall it was a fun, enjoyable movie.... if you once again disregard the laws of physics. I give this one an 7.5/10, in the Fast and Furious series, I give it a 9/10.
